Downton Abbey news has been painfully slow recently, but at long last new cast member Shirley MacLaine has broken the silence to talk about her upcoming role in series 3.
“I sort of had to make her personality up,” MacLaine said to TV Line in reference to her character Martha Levinson, Lady Cora’s mother in the first two episodes of the series. “She is from Long Island and finally lands at Downton Abbey and sees what’s happening to the place when everyone’s coming back from the war.” When asked what she found most interesting about the character, the Oscar winner said it was “her reactions to tradition and the class system. I do my best to be kind to tradition, but frankly think it should shift.”
MacLaine also spoke briefly about Levinson’s relationship with Dame Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess, warning viewers that it wasn’t what they might expect.
Downton Abbey returns to British screens this autumn.
