Sherlock producer and co-star Mark Gatiss says that he and Steven Moffat are busy figuring out when they can film series 4.
Gatiss spoke to Radio Times on the BAFTA red carpet and told the publication that they have “moved significantly closer to getting a date in the diary for series four.”
Moffat, who also attended the red carpet, told Radio Times that Hollywood is to blame. “Benedict and Martin are making some movies. If you say ‘Who cares about movies?’ I agree with you but they are doing them so we’ve got to schedule around that.”
The comments come after recent remarks from Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in which they said they had no clue if there would be a series 4 and that there may be a one-off Sherlock project in the works.
At one point there was a rumor that series 4 was being fast-tracked for an air date in December 2014, but that seems unlikely at this point.
The culprit behind the scheduling and air date delays is the fact that Cumberbatch, Freeman, Gatiss, and Moffat all have very busy schedules that are hard to align with one another.
Nonetheless, Sherlock series 4 is happening… eventually. The good news today is that they are making progress, slowly but surely.
