Speaking ahead of an event at South by Southwest today, Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat offered some new details about the show’s forthcoming special episode.
Moffat confirmed that the Sherlock special – which is 90 minutes in length and rumored to premiere later this year ahead of series 4 – is a one-off story which doesn’t relate to the events of series 3 or series 4. “The special is its own thing,” he told EW. “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”
Rumors that the Sherlock special is set in Victorian London – also known as 19th-century London under the reign of Queen Victoria – first surfaced when Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman wore era-appropriate clothing during a table read. Then, fans began sharing pictures from the set which further confirmed the news.
While Moffat didn’t comment on what is happening in this special episode, producer Mark Gatiss did reveal in February that they’re working on an episode based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Red-Headed League.” Unfortunately, it’s still unclear if the adaptation is part of the special or series 4.
Sherlock series 4 is expected to premiere in late 2015 (or early 2016 if you live in the United States). If true, it’ll arrive exactly two years after Sherlock series 3, leaving the show to continue on its frustrating every-other-year release cycle.
