Who’s who in the world of Shannara? We supply an in depth character guide!
With the Shannara premiere just around the corner, we thought now would be a good time to officially introduce you to the characters of the show. Below there is a brief synopsis of each of the main characters we know will be appearing, which will hopefully guide you through your Shannara journey. First up, meet the Elessedil family!
(The character descriptions in italics come from the official Shannara press packet we received earlier this month.)
John Rhys-Davies – Eventine Elessedil
King Eventine has ruled over the Elven kingdom of Arborlon for decades. Responsible for ending the War of the Four Races, his credibility speaks for itself. What most do not know however is that many of his decisions have been ruled by fear. Notably, his decision to conceal the existence of magic in order to protect his people. “He tried to remove the irrational from the world,” John Rhys-Davies explains. But when his granddaughter Amberle is selected as a member of the Chosen, his path is changed as well.
Poppy Drayton – Amberle Elessedil
Amberle is a princess and, unlike Will, she’s a pure elf. Orphaned as a child, she is strong-willed, passionate, smart and determined to make a mark beyond her royal lineage. She’s led a sheltered life inside the confines of her grandfather’s elvin palace. After defiantly becoming the first female member of The Chosen, a sacred sect dedicated to protecting the Ellcrys, Amberle’s life changes forever when the Ellcrys starts showing her horrific visions of the future. Propelling her into a harrowing journey to save the world.
Aaron Jakubenko – Ander Elessedil
Ander Elessedil has all the things a young prince could ask for. Wealth. Prowess. Power. Except, perhaps, a healthy relationship with his father and brother. However, his party-boy reputation is essentially put on hold while he helps his niece, Amberle, train as a member of The Chosen. Her wellbeing is of great importance to the prince and it seems likely that the bond between these two is the most important one in the young man’s life.
Daniel MacPherson – Arion Elessedil
While his brother is busy partying away his reputation, Prince Arion is preparing to become king. Whether or not his father agrees with this line of succession is up for debate. Arion is eager to take the place of his King Eventine on the throne, but there seems to be an underlying opinion that Ander may be better suited for the role; despite how much he doesn’t want it. As you could imagine, this creates quite the conflict between the three opinionated men.
Austin Butler – Wil Ohmsford
Will is a young man struggling to find his place in the world. Half-elf and half-human, he’s felt the sting of prejudice all his life. Desperate to escape his small rural village, Will learns that he’s the last surviving member of the Shannara bloodline, a family that is able to wield a timeless and powerful magic. Initially, Will rejects his newfound heritage, hoping to become a healer. However, he is soon plunged into a life-or-death quest that will require him to overcome his fears and unlock his true magical power.
Ivana Baquero – Eretria
Raised in a den of thieves, Eretria has been forced to use her instincts to survive. As a member of a traveling clan of humans known as Rovers, she’s become an expert in pickpocketing, slight of hand and other criminal pursuits. Her life has been hard and to protect herself, Eretria has emotionally closed off and is unable to trust easily. Initially seeing Will and Amberle’s quest as a means of escape, she soon realizes that joining their journey may be a part of her destiny.
Manu Bennett – Allanon
Allanon is the last of the druids, an ancient order of protectors whose members could live for centuries and bend magic to their will. As the Ellcrys begins to die, releasing a demon army hellbent on destroying the world. Allanon is called to action and tasked with putting together an alliance of unlikely heroes. As the only person who understands the ultimate threat the demons pose, he knows that his magic alone is not enough to save the world.
