Shadowhunters episode 10 takes us to an alternate world where no one is the same and in the end Jace finds something impossible in Valentine’s lair.
This episode was pretty great. I loved seeing the characters being completely different in the alternate world. Then, of course, there was the continuing unease growing between Jace and Alec which was once again highlighted this episode. The only difference is that Alec seems to being feeling some remorse for the things he has done.
Clary heads to an alternate time line where Shadowhunters and demons don’t exist and downworlders have conformed to human rules. Meliorn warns Clary that she will take on the form of the alternate Clary and could become lost to the alternate world. The goal is for Clary to find the portal to where Valentine is within the alternate world. Clary manages to get Meliorn to agree to allow Jace to go with her to fight Valentine but not to the alternate world.
“Makes poor choices,” should be part of Lydia’s character description. Did she really need to arrest Isabelle? Alec however, seems to be a little more reasonable this episode until he finds out Jace took the Mortal Cup. I understand he is angry primarily because he wants to trade it for Isabelle but he once again isn’t thinking clearly and put both himself and Jace in danger.
Alec allows his hurt and anger to affect his thinking. He uses parabatai tracking to find Jace and in the process allows a demon into the alternate world. It also severely weakens the bond between Jace and Alec. Alec shows remorse but it is a little too late. When he and Lydia go to find Jace he has already jumped to the alternate world to help Clary.
The most fun aspect of this episode was Luke and Simon teaming up. Luke and Simon hanging out, is kind of amazing. Simon hasn’t lost his sense of humor and Luke is willing to work with him but the rest of the pack is not. I love the fact that Simon seeks Luke out when he struggles with being a downworlder. Raphael has had a little too much Simon time and tells him to take a walk.
Luke and Simon work together to clear Luke’s name in the demonic murders. I totally dig the buddy werewolf and vampire show. It looks like Simon helping Luke will also help the werewolves come around liking Simon.
Clary’s time in the alternate world is interesting. First her mom and dad are together which freaks Clary out. I mean when you know your father is a lunatic who currently has your mother in a coma, seeing them all chummy in your apartment is a little weird. The Magnus Bane commercial featuring Luke and Hodge was pretty perfect as well. It goes to show how different things are in the alternate world because Jocelyn doesn’t even know Luke.
Then, of course, there is Simon, Isabelle, and Alec. Simon is still the same with maybe a little more confidence in the lady department. Alec was so different and I loved it! And then there was Isabelle. Bless her geeky heart she was nothing like the real Isabelle. The dancing, is there really anything else to discuss? Oh, maybe her crush on Valentine?!
Clary seeks out Magnus to help her find the portal unfortunately Magnus’ magic has gone dormant. As he is trying to regain his magic Clary tells him to add a little more flourish. That moment was kind of amazing because Magnus was so insulted by her imitation of his movements. Magnus finally gets enough magic back to find the portal which is at the Institute, the site of the party that Alec organized for Val, yeah I don’t like calling him that either.
Clary realizes that the biggest danger to her in the alternate world is Jace. In this world he is in love with her and very attentive, unlike real Jace who clearly likes Clary but is unable to discuss icky things like feelings. Clary tries to avoid him but after one dance she forgets herself.
Magnus and Alec meet at the party when Alec sneaks him in after Clary forgets who she is. Alec and Magnus reverse roles with Alec saying he likes a challenge. I guess this chance meeting gives them hope in the alternate world because in the real world things are way more complicated. There’s that whole Alec marrying Lydia thing in the way of what Alec really wants.
Alternate Jace feels like Clary is avoiding him and ends up following Clary and Magnus as they look for the portal. I have to say Magnus using the images of Church and Chairman Meow to try and ‘wake’ Clary up was priceless. However Jace sniveling at the sight of a demon was just too perfect. Of course, real Jace arrives to help save the day.
Clary and Jace eventually make it through the portal only to find Valentine’s empty hide out. Although it isn’t really empty. Locked in one of the cages they find a man who moves Jace to tears. Supposedly, this man is Michael Wayland, Jace’s dead father. Raise your hand if you think that is somehow Valentine in disguise? Yeah, that’s what I thought.
Next week will be very interesting as Jace tries to figure out what happened to his father and Isabelle stands trial for helping Meliorn escape.
