On his late night talkshow, Seth Meyers challenged the Guardians of Peace to come after him and NBC. NBC does not approve of this message.
We don’t know what was funnier about Seth Meyer’s “Bring it On” segment: his extended challenge to the hacking group that has Sony cowering, or the faux notes from NBC distancing themselves from his actions.
While Meyers extends an invitation to the hackers to read his emails and publish his private information, the notes at the bottom of the screen adds a “pretty please don’t do this” disclaimer to every challenge.
At the end, they refer the hackers to rival network CBS.
Meyers’ humorous treatment of the hacking scandal is the latest in a line of industry responses to the news that Sony has given into the hackers’ demands, deciding to pull The Interview from theaters.
Yesterday we learned that Fox has also pulled a North Korean-themed movie, while Alamo Drafthouse’s plans to air Team America: World Police were scrapped by Paramount.
Fighting for freedom of expression, George R.R. Martin has vowed to show The Interview in his own private cinema, and even the White House is flirting with the idea of screening the movie — if Sony ever lets them.
Of course the threat of more cyberattacks against the multi-million dollar Hollywood corporations is very real. But if they continue to hide behind their walls of money, afraid of how a hacking scandal may affect their brand, where will the censoring stop?
We appreciate Meyers’ light-hearted effort to show that we should not be afraid of hackers — we should fight back, while of course working to find out who is responsible.
