The popular Serial podcast is set to be turned into a TV series, but it’s not going to be what you expect.
According to Deadline, the directing duo behind The Lego Movie and the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars spinoff have picked up the rights to the Serial brand with Fox 21 Television Studios. “Miller and Lord will develop a cable series that would follow the making of the podcast as it follows a case,” according to the report.
Deadline adds that the new TV show will follow a new case, not Serial’s investigation of Adnan Syed and Hae Min Lee.
Miller and Lord are reportedly big fans of the podcast.
“From the very first week of Serial’s release last fall, everyone at Fox 21TVS was obsessed with the podcast,” Fox 21 Television Studios president Bert Salke said in a statement. “One year later, thanks to the incredible passion of Chris and Phil, who flew to New York and shared their vision with Sarah, Julie, Alissa and Ira for what the series could be, we’re moving forward on this exciting project. We are confident we’ll attract a spectacular writer and look forward to pitching it to outlets very soon.”
Added This American Life’s Julie Snyder, “Chris and Phil take an unexpected approach to telling stories and that is so appealing to us at Serial. Developing a show with them is exciting because we feel like we speak the same language, only they’re smarter than us.”
We wonder if this show will be like Lifetime’s new hit UnReal, in which we see the behind-the-scenes drama on a Bachelor-type show? Or like HBO’s The Newsroom, which depicted life at a cable news station?
The news comes just a week after we learned that Serial season 2 will examine the curious case of Bowe Bergdahl.
