Hypable spoke to the cast of Teen Wolf at the San Diego Comic-Con roundtables, and discussed what we can expect from season 5.
In attendance in the press room were Executive Producer Jeff Davis, plus Tyler Posey (Scott), Dylan Sprayberry (Liam), and Cody Christian (Theo). The highlights from our table will be discussed below, and you can check out the Not Another Teen Wolf Podcast Tumblr for more fun quotes.
Jeff Davis
At the top of season 5A, we saw Lydia in Eichen House being interrogated by Dr. Valack. Considering we don’t know much about him or his unusual powers, is it safe to assume we can trust Lydia? “Yes, I can say she is a reliable narrator. […] When catching up to the present…it won’t be [season 5, episode 20], it’ll be sooner than that. It’s a complicated season, but we love complicated.”
We love complicated too, as it allows us to explore many arcs from many different different characters. Davis spoke about several big players this season, telling us that we will find out what Parrish is this season: “I won’t tell you when, but it happens in 5A.”
Speaking of Kira, Davis also says, “She definitely has a lot of struggle. What’s happening to her is, the fox spirit within her is vying for independence.” Adding, “We call it a symbiotic relationship, It’s the fox within her,” and, “We’re going to see her mother try to help her tame it.”
Most surprisingly, perhaps, was Davis’ comments about Theo, saying, “I’m excited for [the audience] to see Theo, to see Cody Christian. I said at the beginning [of the season] I want a character we can really hate. I want our Joffrey. Trust me, you’re going to hate him so much by the end of the season. It’s fun to have a character like that to hate.”
Finally, hinting at the purpose of this season, the EP teases, “There’s a big change up that happens in our mid-season finale, in [season 5, episode 10], and you’ll see that changes things.” He also adds, “This will give you a hint to what’s really going on. We were thinking of it as the Island of Doctor Moreau season.”
Tyler Posey
A huge part of the promotion for this season has been teasing whether or not Stiles and Scott will continue to be friends by the end. We asked if Stiles’ fears are realistic, or if he thinks Scott and Stiles can make it through anything.
“They’re completely realistic!” Posey tells us. “Everybody goes through that. I went through that when I was a kid. All of the friends I was planning on going to school with and grew up with are still in my life, but not as much as they used to be. So yeah, his fears are completely realistic. But they’re aware of it. He has these fears because he’s aware of the situation that could happen and them separating and not being friends anymore. So I think if they stay on top of it, and they work at it — it’s like a relationship, you know? The fears are legitimate, but I think they’re going to hold on.”
Dylan Sprayberry
If Scott and Stiles do break apart, which side would Liam take? Sprayberry says, “As much as Liam and Stiles fight and bicker back and forth, they really respect each other, but I definitely still think Scott and Liam’s relationship is a whole other level, you know? They’re like brothers in the way that Scott had to bite Liam, that’s the only way that was going to pan out, and really took him under his wing and was really the only one that could show him what to do in that situation. And that’s who he goes to for advice. So I definitely think he would go with Scott, especially because [Scott’s] his Alpha and [Liam’s] the Beta.”
Two characters Liam has been interacting with a lot lately include Hayden and Mason. Sprayberry first spoke of his character’s relationship with Hayden, saying, “There’s something that happened when they were in elementary school, and it kind of caused this whole snowball effect of hatred. It’s going to stay comedic, it’s going be fun. It’s going to be explained in [season 5, episode 4].”
With Mason, Sprayberry gives us some history of the characters that he and Khylin Rhambo have talked about amongst themselves. “In our minds we’ve been friends for life,” he says. “Like, I know a kid who was born in the same hospital as me, same day next to each other, and we were friends when we were younger and kind of drifted off and then started hanging out a little bit again and that’s kind of like how I think our relationship is in the show. We’ve been friends since a very young age, elementary school, and then we split [in] separate ways for a little bit and then we just reconnected. We realized we’re like brothers.”
Cody Christian
It seems clear that Christian was not aware he was the Joffrey of Teen Wolf, as Davis previously told us. When he learned this information, he seemed shocked, and then grateful: “Oh, wow. Wow. Honestly, it’s an honor, the opportunity already being on the show, the character that I’ve been given, this meaty character with so much substance. Theo has everywhere to go in this season, and playing a character like that is just an incredible experience. And Teen Wolf being established, though, in its fifth season, that’s just so badass to me. I take that with the utmost respect.”
Not only is Theo untrustworthy, he also seems to have unexpected powers. After Derek’s arc of becoming a full wolf, we’re curious as to how Theo can also make that transition. When asked if he’s something other than a werewolf, Christian replies, “We saw it and it is what it is. I think he’s full werewolf. And also wolf-wolf. Werewolf and wolf-wolf.”
Speaking of the teaser trailer we saw at the panel, Christian comments on his scenes with Malia, saying, “I think that between Theo and Malia…there’s something that connects the two. We still have to, as the audience, learn what that is, and I don’t even think that as the characters they know, but it will be established later on in the season.”
