Last night’s episode of Scream Queens, “Pumpkin Patch,” gave us even more details about who is behind the killings of the Red Devil.
Scream Queens continued its Halloween-themed episodes this month with “Pumpkin Patch.” This year for Halloween, the Chanels are going as the wives of fallen presidents to Chanel’s pumpkin patch party. Chanel No.5 is assigned Mary Todd Lincoln, which results in her losing her cool and says that she’s done with the Chanels. “THERE’S THE DOOR BITCH,” screams Lea Michele’s character as No.5 exits.
Dean Munsch decides to close down the campus following Zayday’s disappearance, which pisses everyone off at Kappa. Chad makes the stand that it’s the sluttiest night of the year, so the school campus should definitely not be shut down. His monologue was definitely the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard of in your life, which made us love Chad even more. “I have no idea how you got in to this college,” says Munsch after his speech. She follows up with “Halloween’s canceled,” but that doesn’t stop Chanel. She decides to have her pumpkin patch party on November 1st.
Chanel No.6 admits to being a switch hitter (when she really means a double agent) and gets Chanel No.5 to start manipulating everyone to get Zayday elected. There is still a lot to figure out about Hester/Chanel No.6 this season. What exactly are her motivations? She seems like such an obvious choice that there’s no way she could be the Red Devil right? Could she be a red herring?
While Chanel was taking a test, police break in to the classroom and tell her that she is under arrest for the murder of Bean. She eventually goes to jail where the show once again mocks pop culture with an obvious spoof of Orange is the New Black. However, just when you settle in to start laughing at the scene, it abruptly ends with the other Chanels bailing her out.
Meanwhile, we get our first glimpse of kidnapped Zayday who’s at the bottom of a chamber inside the Red Devil’s lair. We get a first person view of what exactly is going on in the Red Devil headquarters, which is complete with a mannequin and sewing machine resembling a scene from Project Runway. More on this later.
“Don’t you think a girl who wants to be president of this house should be able to prove her abilities by escaping the lair of a psychopath,” Chanel No.6 says. While it applies to Zayday’s position in the Kappa house, it always pretty much sums up the exact scenario she is in as she’s trapped. Remember what we said about Chanel No.6 being a little too obvious?
Poor, frantic Grace continues to worry about everything (unlike anyone else in the show), as she barges in on her dad and Gigi hooking up. She is really upset that Zayday is still missing and her Dad sympathizes. We can’t help but notice the scenes with Grace and her Dad seem slightly off. These two characters really don’t act like they are father and daughter. There must be more to the story here. Do you agree?
Wes, Gigi, Denise, Grace and Pete hover over a map of town to try to plan a door to door search for Zayday. Luckily Grace happens to remember Zayday’s password to Find My Device, an app similar to Find My iPhone that can pin point its exact location. After finding the address, Denise beckons everyone to go catch “that murderer Zayday Williams.”
The Zayday detectives arrive at the residence, and go into the cellar looking for Zayday. Wes, Grace and Pete find a door and open it into the Red Devil’s lair which has the nachos that Zayday loves so much sitting around. Gigi and Denise find another room that has an operating table and a myriad of slaughtering tools. After the power gets cut, Denise tasers Gigi, who then tasers the Red Devil. Denise runs away to tell the others, but when they return to see who it was, Gigi says that he jumped up, hit her in the face and escaped. It’s pretty obvious at this point that Gigi pretty much let the Red Devil go and is definitely involved with the murders. However by the end of the scene, Zayday is still nowhere to be found.
Chanel No.5 is lighting all the jack-o-lanterns with a couple of the golf bros before they get chased into the corn maze, an obvious nod to Kubrick’s “The Shining.” During the chase, the brothers ask for Chanel to choose one of them. She chooses Roger which upsets the other brother. The Red Devil traps the brother that Chanel didn’t choose and kills him in the maze. Aside from this scene, the whole pumpkin patch storyline seemed completely irrelevant and unnecessary. The killing literally could have happened anywhere. It seems like the pumpkin patch motif was created almost exclusively to throw in a reference to “The Shining.”
Back at the Kappa house, Chanel reveals that her pumpkin patch was canceled and that she is demanding that elections take place for the presidency. As soon as they start voting, Zayday appears out of nowhere. Zayday recaps her kidnapping saying that it was actually quite lovely. According to Zayday, the Red Devil provided nachos for her while she was kidnapped, which she thinks is a notion of him coming on to her. She plays into it before surprising him and stabbing him in the hand with a fork and escaping. Chanel says she doesn’t believe a word of it before Grace rushes in and declares that Zayday was telling the truth.
In the final scene of the episode, the Red Devil is stalking Gigi from behind, before we realize it was all set up. Gigi begins talking to the Red Devil saying “you’re late.” She follows up saying that “he has to go” and that the situation in the cellar got “out of hand.” Okay, so as previously mentioned, Gigi is 100% involved with the killings. And it sounds like Wes is next on the list.
Four episodes in and Scream Queens is getting better with every episode. Not only has the pacing of every episode improved week over week, but the laugh out loud moments have as well. Denise, played by Niecy Nash, describing the cellar room as “smelling like booty,” is one of her many hilarious lines in this episode. Additionally, we’re left wondering what the motivations are among many key cast members. Gigi, Chanel No.6, Denise, Zayday. Any one, or all of them, could be the Red Devil. Next week’s episode promises to be the “deadliest episode yet,” so expect some potentially high profile murders.
