Producers of the Mojo stage revival announced this morning that Rupert Grint will helm the role of Sweets.
Mojo is about “rival gangs in 1950s Soho and its nascent rock’n’roll scene,” according to The Guardian. It will co-star Ben Whishaw, Daniel Mays, and Brendan Coyle (Mr. Bates on Downton Abbey).
Grint’s character is an amphetamine-addicted gang member.
Ian Rickson, who directed Mojo’s original premiere in 1996 is rejoining the production and commented on Grint’s involvement. “I’d seen the Potter films with my daughter and always thought Rupert was truthful as Ron Weasley,” he said to The Daily Mail. “There’s something ordinary and centred about him, and in this world of Mojo you want that grittiness.”
He also thinks Grint’s involvement will be beneficial to attracting a new audience. “A whole lot of people who might not see Mojo will come and see it,” he said.
This will be one of Grint’s largest projects since the Harry Potter franchise ended in 2011. He’ll also be following in the steps of co-star Dan Radcliffe who has starred in numerous stage shows including Broadway and West End productions of Equus. Most recently he had the lead role in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in New York, and currently he’s in The Cripple of Inishmaan in London.
Their female co-star Emma Watson said in June that she thinks theater will be her next move after she completes her studies at Brown university. “I’d love to try theater. I’ve never done it before. I did some theater at Brown. I love the camaraderie of a theater group,” she said. “As soon as I graduate, that’s my next [thing].”
Mojo will begin previews in October at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London.
