In perhaps the saddest rumor about the Spider-Man franchise, Sony is reportedly working on an Aunt May origins film, which would feature Peter Parker’s aunt in her early days.
Rumors of Sony stumbling around in the dark with the Spider-Man franchise have reached a new low, with Aunt May’s origins reportedly being delved into. While this rumor comes from the notorious Latino Review, it’s an interesting look at what Sony is even potentially pondering for their most popular superhero franchise.
Sony’s management has been under pressure since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to perform as well as they’d hoped at the box office and creating blockbusters with female leads may be their attempts to right the studio’s ship.
We’re much more excited about their potential female Spider-Man related superhero solo film, which is much more likely to come to fruition than Aunt May: The Origins.
A recent report suggests we could be seeing The Black Cat, Silver Sable, Spider-Girl, and Silk in a film together. Spider-Woman could also be included, but it’s never been clear as to whether Sony actually owns the rights to the character.
LT reports, “Yes, an Aunt May movie. A movie about Aunt May as a youth, before she was shouldered with the responsibility of raising Peter Parker. The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying “classier Agent Carter” without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming series.”
It sounds as though the film could be more interesting than one might imagine, but the potential for this film coming to theaters is highly unlikely. We’d much rather Sony focus on releasing a female superhero Spider-Man film, and figuring out what they plan to do with Andrew Garfield’s third Spider-Man film.
Let us know if you’d like to see Aunt May in “some sort of espionage story,” or if you’d rather see the studio focus on their more bankable characters.
