Appearing on Ellen DeGeneres’ daytime talk show on Tuesday, Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. flat out confirmed an Iron Man 4.
“Are you going to do a fourth Iron Man?” DeGeneres asked Downey Jr. bluntly.
“I know there’s going to be a bunch more Marvel movies and they have big ideas of how to do it best, and we’re in the middle of negotiation and [inaudible].”
“So ‘yes,'” DeGeneres says.
“Okay, yes.”
The remark – released as a 22-second clip by Ellen on YouTube – quickly made its way around the internet as soon as it was released, with many outlets claiming this is certain confirmation.
The problem, however, is that Downey Jr. appears to be joking. If you watch the video clip (below) you’ll see that he widens and almost roles his eyes when DeGeneres says to him “so ‘yes.'”
More evidence to support he’s kidding: In a Reddit AMA this morning the actor addressed a recent joke he made about Mel Gibson directing Iron Man 4. “It was an offhanded remark to a journalist and friend. I have other projects in mind for Mel and I – sooner than later the Marvel Roster will be made public and all questions will be answered,” he said.
While he’s certainly not denying Iron Man 4 in these comments, it’s important to remember that he’s teasing people in order to promote his new film The Judge. His trick is working.
And let’s not forget he said there are no plans for Iron Man 4 just last month.
Our interest is piqued, however, by his comments about Marvel’s future plans. If anything, any eventual announcements may just confirm Iron Man 4 is certainly not in the pipeline.
UPDATE: In an interview with David Letterman conducted this evening (man, this guy gets around!), Downey Jr. confirms that there’s no Iron Man 4 in the pipeline.
