The Alien movie set to wipe out half of the series’ canon has been dropped, Ridley Scott reveals amidst Alien: Covenant promotion.
With Covenant on the brink of premiering, Ridley Scott has been spoken about its awkward, semi-related cousin Alien 5, which was to be directed by Neill Blomkamp.
Unlike Covenant and its predecessor Prometheus, this movie was set to follow the original protagonist Ripley and her protegé Newt — both of whom had died in earlier movies.
Clearly, it was a strange concept from the get-go, but with Sigourney Weaver potentially set to reprise her role, we were willing to give it a shot.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like anyone else were, as the project seems to have fizzled out before really getting off the ground.
Ridley Scott tells Allocine, via Coming Soon:
“There was never a script. It was an idea that evolved from, I believe, a 10-page pitch, and I was meant to be part of the producers on that. It didn’t evolve. Fox decided that they didn’t want to do it and that was it. I’d already done ‘Prometheus’ and I was planning ‘Covenant’ so I dunno.”

At least we’ll still be able to see Weaver in the upcoming Avatar movies, right?! (Where her character, uh, has also been killed off. Just don’t question it…)
