Another teasing addition has been made to the cast of Game of Thrones season 6, as Richard E. Grant will play an as-yet unnamed role.
The veteran English actor has appeared on Downton Abbey, HBO’s Girls, and Doctor Who, where he portrayed The Great Intelligence. Grant has also had many film roles, featuring in Gosford Park and The Iron Lady with Meryl Streep; he has also done voice work for animated classics such as Pocahontas and Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
In what is becoming a pattern for Game of Thrones season 6, HBO has not revealed Grant’s role in the upcoming season. The network took the same approach with actor Ian McShane, who has been cast in a small, unnamed role of “key importance.” Like McShane, Grant is a decent candidate for Samwell’s intimidating father Randyll Tarly. He could also fill the role of one of several harsh northern lords called for in casting notices, join the growing Ironborn storyline, or even appear across the Narrow Sea.
Not every new casting for Game of Thrones season 6 has been shrouded in mystery, however — though some have been surprising. The venerable Max von Sydow will take over the arcane role of the Three-Eyed Raven, while Danish actor Pilou Asbæk has signed on as the brutal pirate Euron Greyjoy. In addition, Sam Tarly’s sorry home life is certain to be expanded upon with the casting of UnReal‘s Freddie Stroma as his manly brother Dickon.
It is interesting to note that no new female roles have been announced for Game of Thrones season 6 — though perhaps this, too, is part of HBO’s mechanism for keeping the wildly popular series sufficiently mysterious.
Game of Thrones season 6 will premiere in Spring 2016 on HBO.
