Prison Break is back with more of what you love next spring, and the general consensus among the cast and showrunners at San Diego Comic-Con is that the stakes are higher than ever.
Hypable was on hand when the Prison Break crew hit the Hilton Bayfront for a series of roundtable interviews aimed at discussing the upcoming revival series. When the show picks back up again next spring, it’ll find Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) attempting to escape a prison in the Middle East.
Miller himself described Scofield’s new digs best when he said “the new prison makes [Fox River] look like The Hilton.”
“It is kill or be killed. Danger around every corner– that’s part of the excitement of the new series– we’ve upped the stakes,” explained Miller. “Our canvass is now global, our threat is international.”
Michael, Lincoln and the rest of the gang may be up against new obstacles, but at the end of the day, those who tune in to the next installment of the beloved series will find a lot of the same elements they fell in love with the first time around.
“The brothers connecting, the love of family, the tattoos that are mysteries that need to be solved — it’s all there,” promised producer Vaun Wilmott.”I think at the end, [fans] are really going to be satisfied.”
If the clips are anything to go by, this brand new season of Prison Break is going to be one wild ride. The action-packed elements of each episode is something that producer Michael Horowitz attributes to the fact that this new season is only nine episodes long.
“It’s kind of all killer, no filler,” explained Horowitz. “You don’t have to get lost in the middle of the season and kind of meander around.”
Despite the fact that both Wilmott and Horowitz agree that nine episodes was the perfect number for which to tell this particular story, there were some drawbacks to choosing to make a shorter season. The biggest one being that it didn’t leave a lot of room to bring back as many of the original cast members as they would have liked.
“In that way, the nine epodes did limit the ability to service everybody that you would have loved to have served,” explained Wilmott. “I think [creator Paul Scheuring] had to make those tough choices.”
The good news is, we’ll get well-rounded story arcs for all the characters that will be returning, as well as some new characters that are yet to be introduced.
In fact, one of the meetings we’re most excited to see unfold is that between Michael and the son he’s never met.
“It’s a source of ongoing pain, and longing, and angst to know that his child is out there somewhere and he’s never even held his son in his arms,” explained Miller.
But despite the fact that Michael’s never met his son, it sounds like he’s inherited some aspects of his father nevertheless.
“We do tease in interesting ways how Michael Scofield’s son is definitely Michael Scofield’s son,” revealed Miller.
