ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars kicked off season four with “A is for A-L-I-V-E” picking up where season three’s finale “A Dangerous Game” left off with more drama and mysteries abound. What follows is a recap, so naturally spoilers are included from this episode.
Pretty Little Liars reminds fans of the major events of the last season including the Halloween episode, Toby’s return (Keegan Allen), the breakup of Ezra (Ian Harding) and Aria (Lucy Hale), and Mona (Janel Parrish) teaming up with the girls.
The season four premiere opened where the last episode ended with the girls opening up Detective Wilden’s (Bryce Johnson) car only to find a dead pig in the trunk. Mona has disappeared and while the girls think she’s abandoned them, Hanna (Ashley Benson) finds that she is trying to help her mom. Are you happy to see the friendship renew itself between Mona and Hanna?
The girls are not taking Mona’s overture that well and instead grill her about her involvement with the A Team. Mona revealed that Shana (Aeriel Miranda) is in-love with Jenna (Tammin Sursok), and that they’re both scared of Melissa (Torrey DeVitto). Ian‘s (Ryan Merriman) killer is still unknown as Mona denies her involvement in his murder. Just when the girls think she’s played them yet again, Mona took Emily’s car with her own set of keys to get coffee. They agree to work with Mona as long as she gives them the dirt she has on them.
Detective Wilden’s body is found, so we here at Hypable were correct when we guessed that his body would be found. Toby returns to the scene of the fire only to find that the building is burned and a red coat was discovered. Mona reveals that Wilden and Melissa put Aria in the box on the Halloween train. Why do you think Wilden was involved?
The girls hear their names being called only to find mini-versions of themselves with dolls named after them. Did you think the children looked like their teenage counterparts? Hanna makes plans with Mona to keep her within her sights, much to Emily’s displeasure.
In other news, Ali’s mother moves back to Rosewood as Hypable previously previewed. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Toby investigate the burn site only to find that they’re not alone. Spencer seems to buy into the theory that Ali may still be alive, that’s two of the Pretty Little Liars believing their leader is no longer dead.
Aria and Ezra have the awkward first post-breakup meeting, and he reveals that he decided to take a job at Rosewood High. He thankfully reminds Pretty Little Liars viewers that he has a family, and she leaves addressing him with the formal Mr. Fitz. Do you think Wes (Gregg Sulkin) might be a love interest for Aria this season to further stir up the drama?
Toby receives a threatening text from A about his mother and lies to Spencer about the contents. Not a smart way to rebuild trust in a relationship. Aria is paranoid about Mr. Hackett (John O’Brien) figuring out about her involvement with Ezra, while Hanna rocks a sixties era outfit. Aria believes that Mr. Hackett figured it out and arrested Aria, only to discover she was daydreaming.
Paige (Lindsey Shaw) has a full ride to Stanford and tries to get Emily to come with her. She seems to forget the fact that it isn’t easy to get recruited never mind get in to Stanford. Emily decides to come with Paige and forget her dreams of attending Danby. Mona lets Hanna know that she’s aware that she’s faking and tries to earn back her trust by giving her Wilden’s computer chip. Remember this chip implicates Hanna’s mom in Wilden’s hit and run.
Jenna confronts Emily with a message for Toby in case of her demise. She also lets slip that Wilden saw Ali the night that she died. Do you think Jenna is just being paranoid?
Spencer encounters Mrs. DiLaurentis staring at her through her bedroom window. What do you think her storyline will be this season?
A veiled mourner spikes the Pretty Little Liars’ interest as they split up to look for Wilden’s casket to discover what secrets lie within. Spencer tumbles upon it only to find Mona and a cellphone ringing in Wilden’s pocket. The cellphone turns out to be Ashley Marin’s (Laura Leighton) cellphone. At the Paley Center festival last night, executive producer, Marlene King, revealed that the parents would play a larger role in this season.
Mrs. DiLaurentis invites the girls to sit with her at the funeral only to insult Hanna and exclude Mona in her seating arrangements. Does she remind you of anyone? Pretty Little Liars then flashes back to Toby’s memory of his mother’s illness and Allison’s curiosity about it. A blackmails Toby into bringing the lair to him or her in order for information about what ails his mother. The girls meet with the new detective Holbrook (Sean Faris) who reassures them of his good intentions. The episode ends with A sending the Pretty Little Liars a video of them discovering Wilden’s car and the veiled lady revealed as A.
What did you think of “A is for A-L-I-V-E”? Are you excited for season four of Pretty Little Liars? Do you think A and red coat will be revealed?
