This episode of Pretty Little Liars felt a lot like an ocean full of icebergs, where no ship was safe.
Pretty Little Liars season 7, episode 2, “Bedlam,” shall forever be known as the place where season 6 relationships went to die! After one hour of romantic mayhem, we potentially have a grand total of zero couples left standing from last season. The original ships are now free to sail once more. If they sink, they’ll have nobody to blame but themselves.
This episode was extremely heavy on the romance, so let’s talk about that first. Now that Hanna is safe and sound, everyone’s free to focus on their love lives. What’s that? Ali’s still in terrible danger? Well, the other girls have boy drama to attend to, so Emily will deal with that. She always did love her the most.
The most complicated love triangle at the moment is the one that consists of Hanna, Spencer and Caleb. From the first day he showed up at Rosewood High School, Caleb Rivers has been one of my absolute favorite characters. Pretty Little Liars season 7, episode 2, came dangerously close to ruining that for me.
It all started with his conversation with Hanna in Lucas’ kitchen. After their kiss in the Lost Woods Resort, they obviously had some things to discuss. Hanna found a way to justify it, saying that she was scared and Caleb has always made her feel safe. She claimed that her admission that she never stopped loving Caleb was just brought on by the intensity of the situation, and the feelings were “only for a minute.”
In the end, Caleb appeared to agree with Hanna, but he clearly wants her back! It was extremely shady for Caleb to act as if everything was good with Spencer after that conversation, and cringe-worthy when he was trying to get her to “come to bed.”
Luckily, Spencer isn’t one to be played for long. After strategically placing herself to overhear Caleb’s conversation with Hanna, she boldly asked the terrifying but necessary question: Did we make a mistake? Caleb’s answer wasn’t clear (which is frustrating since he’s always been such a straight-forward guy), so these two are still hanging on by a thread, but I’m guessing Spaleb won’t survive the next episode of Pretty Little Liars.
One great thing about this whole situation was how mature the two women behaved. Spencer didn’t let her jealousy distract her from true concern and love for Hanna, and there was definitely no “stay away from my man,” moment in sight. Hanna respectfully let go of her hold on Caleb and tried to fix things with her fiance. Unfortunately, her kidnapping left her damaged to the point where she doesn’t feel like that can happen. It was fun while it lasted, Jordan. We will miss your beautiful face and accent dearly.
After the frustrating Caleb debacle, it was nice to see Aria simply end things with Liam. However, things can never be quite that simple on Pretty Little Liars. It turns out, Liam will now be editing Aria and Ezra’s book again! Since Aria left out some of the gory details when explaining herself to Liam, he wasn’t quite as thrilled as the rest of us when he walked in on that Ezria hand holding moment. His (potentially valid?) rant about Ezra taking advantage of Aria surely means that the rest of this writing process will be anything but smooth.
Now that we’ve covered all of the fun couples, let’s talk about a more puzzling pairing: Mary Drake and Elliot. After causing a fandom-wide panic at the end of the Pretty Little Liars season 7 premiere, it turns out Mary Drake just wanted to offer Hanna a ride home! She even tried to convince her to go to the hospital or the police station.
Even though we’re conditioned to be suspicious of anyone with Mary Drake’s face, she has so far been quite helpful and open in her interactions with the Liars. If we hadn’t seen her with Elliot in the season 6 finale, I may have been inclined to trust her. The only unbelievable thing she said was that Jessica had been the “warm one” of their family. Sorry, Mary, that’s a little far-fetched, even for this show!
If you’re anything like me, you spent half of this episode trying to figure out what kind of game Mary Drake and Elliot are playing. They originally appeared to be working together, but they now seem to have entirely separate agendas.
After finally revealing himself to Alison, Elliot banned anyone else from visiting her, including Mary Drake. However, after receiving a call from a terrified Alison, Emily wasn’t about to take no for an answer. She teamed up with Mary Drake and somehow got in to see Alison. Alison is looking way worse than when Emily took her to the sanitarium. If Elliot is trying to keep her in the psychiatric facility for the rest of her life, he’s doing all the right things.
Understandably, Elliot wasn’t impressed when he walked in to Ali’s room to find Emily and Mary Drake. Thinking that his cover may have been blown by his own ally, he called Mary in for a private conversation. Emily overheard enough to deduce that they were working together, but even though we were privy to the entire conversation, I’m still extremely confused about where they stand.
Apparently, Mary Drake was in their little scheme for the Carissimi Group money (which she hasn’t yet received), and Elliot was presumably in it to make Charlotte’s killer pay, but that’s yet to be fully confirmed. Why Elliot got close to Alison before Charlotte’s death is a complete mystery, as is whether or not Alison actually killed Charlotte. Wherever Alison was taken at the end of the episode, hopefully there will be some answers there!
Who’s on our rA.D.ar?
- Elliot — he’s definitely up to something, we just have no idea what!
- Mary Drake — simply because she was working with evil Elliot, and we just can’t bring ourselves to trust a DiLaurentis
- Sara Harvey — forever and always
- Melissa and Wren — still on the list largely because of their British affiliation
- Spencer — because this dream just didn’t add up
