Episode #18 – Julian Murphy Speaks (But Not to Us)

Hosted by Pamela Gocobachi, Selina Wilken

January 24, 2013

Surprise! Another Talks of Camelot episode this week! There’s just too much Merlin news, you guys. This episode deviates once again from our rewatch plans, as instead we discuss last night’s National Television Awards and the special features released on the Merlin series 5, volume 2 DVDs – in particular the finale commentary featuring Julian Murphy and Katie McGrath.

Shownotes:

Colin Morgan wins an NTA award for Best Actor!
– …but Merlin doesn’t. Bradley James is judging you
– The series 5, volume 2 DVDs have been released which means the final ever blooper reel
– Also some deleted scenes showing more of Mordred’s inner conflict
The commentary for the finale features Julian Murphy, and this might be the only time we get a showrunner’s perspective on the ending to the series!
– Murphy reveals that the magic reveal almost didn’t happen. Whaaat.
– Murphy and McGrath also talk about Merlin and Arthur’s relationship, and confirm that the pair do indeed love each other
– We try to define Merlin and Arthur’s relationship. And we think we kind of manage to do it…
– Gweon is canon! Well… we wish it was, anyway. We even did research!
– Morgana/Morgause?
– Murphy explains why the series had to end with tragedy
– We discuss why some fans were left very unsatisfied with the finale
– But also try to explain why we loved it, despite it not being what we might have hoped it would have been
– Arthur was already dead when they rode on the dragon, sad times
– Did Murphy shoot down Pamela’s rebirth theory?
– Once Arthur rises, will he die and leave Merlin alone all over again?
– Does Katie McGrath write fanfiction?
– As you can see, we have lots of questions left for Julian Murphy and the other showrunners. Call us!
