Let’s welcome the newest addition to the Hypable podcasting network, The Secret Diaries Chat! This original show is dedicated to in-depth discussion about the CW dramas The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle.

The hosts of this show are Hypable writers Selina Wilken (also from Hunger Games Chat), Laura Byrne-Cristiano, Jennifer Lamoreaux and Sonya Faria.

In our pilot episode we talk about the two most recent episodes of The Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle, ‘The Ties That Bind’ and ‘Witness’.

- The four hosts Selina, Laura, Jen and Sonya begin by introducing themselves, and explain how the show works: first we talk about the most recent episode of The Vampire Diaries, then carry on with The Secret Circle discussion!
- If you only want to listen to the Secret Circle part of the show, skip ahead to 28:26.
- This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries was ‘The Ties That Bind.’ The hosts discuss this episode in depth:
- What’s the deal with Bonnie’s mom?
- Stefan/Elena moment: yay or nay?
- Will Tyler win back Caroline?
- Does Dr. Fell have ulterior motives?
- Who’s in the coffin? And much more.
- The Secret Circle discussion is about the episode ‘Witness’
- The hosts spend some time dissecting the information-packed boat scene, and speculate about who the dark haired girl was
- Team Jacob or Team Edward Adam?
- Will John Blackwell turn out to be pure evil?
- What is Melissa’s purpose going to be?
- Who is the second Blackwell child? Are they even in the circle?

You have no idea how much I love you for coming up with this. I really must catch up on VD now. I live in Ireland and this podcast isn’t in Irish iTunes store but hopefully it’ll appear in few days like Hunger Games chat did. Until then I’ll listen to it  in another format and let you know what I think when I get the chance to listen to it properly in full.

    BEST. IDEA. EVER!!!!!!!!!

    • http://hypable.com Selina

We’re so glad you like the idea! If you click the iTunes link it should show up in your iTunes? That’s what it does in my British iTunes store but of course it might be different from country to country.

Its there now. Will listen to it tonight and let you know :cD

Brilliant episode of the show(s) and the podcast. So interesting an engaging. Am I the only one who finds The Secret Circle way more engaging than Vampire Diaries. VD is good but there’s so much more going on in TSC. Also, when you compare season 1 of TSC to season 1 of VD, TSC is streets ahead. Let’s be frank here. Season 1 of VD was rough.

        Just 12 quick things(lol):

I’m not 100% positive but I thought that that the girl who saw Cassie on the boat was the teen version of what will be Lauren Stamile’s character. Didn’t Jake’s mom call her Lucy(which is the name of Stamile’s character)? And, when discussing her character, Stamile did say she was there that day so it would make sense.

I know you said you didn’t read the books but, just so you know, the books are totally different. Some characters have been renamed(in the book, Cassie’s mom’s name is not Amelia), some characters in the books are dead that are in the show and vice versa, the parents aren’t even seen once in the whole book series(with the exception of Cassie’s). That’s just the start. Totally different. The CW just took the basic premise, a few characters models and then built from scratch from there.

I’m not suggesting that they’re related in any way, bit did you think Cassie is the spitting image of Jake’s mom? Its like some sort of freudian link between his abandonment issues and his taste in women. Weird, right?

Personally, I think the other Blackwell child was Nick. And in season 2, some uber-demon is going to resurrect him and possess him to use his dark magic. It can’t be Melissa or the demon that possessed her would have tapped into hr dark magic and killed them all.

Speaking of demons, how did Abaddon come about? He said, when he possessed Nick and was talking to Dawn, that Dawn summoned him 16 years ago, leading us to believe that demons had something to do with the fire, which is clearly not the case. So was Dawmn the only demon-summoning teen and why was she playing with demons at all?

As for the parents, is it possible that 2 Circles interbred to give birth to the Cassie’s Circle? That would explain why all their parents are witches. A full Circle is 6. 12 parents=2 Circles.

I don’t think Ethan made a deal with the witch hunters. Jake’s dad was trying to negotiate a deal and they killed him no problem.

The reason Faye got the Circle’s power in Fire/Ice is cos she she tried to get Cassie’s but Cassie’s was too powerful and reflected Faye’s spell onto the rest of the Circle. I don’t think it had anything to do with Faye herself.

I think Cassie’s dad might bring out the darkness in Cassie, Diana will talk her down, John will tell her that it was Diana’s dad that killed Amelia, at which point Cassie goes nuts and becomes a devil queen. I know I’m a guy and guys don’t this but SQUEEEEEEEE!!!!

I think the reason that we don’t buy Adam as a love interest is cos Britt and Thomas have the chemistry of a wet dish rag. Meanwhile Chris and Britt exude sexual tension.

        CAKE!!!!!!!!!

Also Phoebe Tonkin is a goddess :cD

Sorry this comment is so long. I love this show

I got instantly turn off by you guys putting Stefan down but loving Damon. I get the charm but when you get over that and think about everything he’s done.
Everything Stefan does was to protect Damon and he goes chasing his girlfriend. I also get mad when people said “old Stefan was boring” argument. Oh Stefan is a good supportive boyfriend, who listen to Elena and is sweet. What a boring boyfriend.

    • https://twitter.com/#!/SonyaWrites Sonya Faria

Here’s a a few questions: How do you feel about the way Stefan is acting now? Do you think he’s still playing this evil role to protect Elena or do you think he’s really lost his humanity? And do you see him changing his ways to get her back now that he see’s it’s getting a bit more serious between Damon and Elena? Let us know what you think so we can include it in our next podcast!

      • Misswriter18

I think Stefan fears the consequences of being with Elena, so the bad-boy thing is partly an act. However, I think he might have lost some of his former self. That moment between Stefan and Elena in the last episode felt too meaningful. If he had really lost his humanity, he wouldn’t act hurt by her admitting to the Damon thing. Or was I the only one who saw the strange hurt/jealous look on his face? :P

I’m not sure what Stefan will do, but he better decide fast before Damon totally swoops in and steals the girl.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1381504748 Hibaq Farah

        1) I think he’s too focus in trying to save everyone and kill Klaus that he can’t see right from wrong anymore. He has a goal and he won’t let his feelings for Elena blur that. He want’s to save them but he think he needs to drive them away in order to do so.
        2) I think he’s turn off his humanity but he can’t help himself from let it shine through once in awhile especially when Elena drops a bomb on him. 3) I do see them getting back together at one point. After she dips in the Damon pool a bit. I will bite my lip and accept that for a while. Although i probably wont be able to stop myself from telling an obsessive Delena Shipper off once in awhile. Stefan is going to be endgame i believe that. After everything Keven Williams and Julie Plec have said about their “Epic Love” I’m positive. Or Elena will end not choosing anyone. I do however also think she should be alone or bring a new third party love interest. I feel she needs to find herself outside of the brothers in order to choose a good partner.  Anyway keep up the show, i think it’s a good idea. :) :)

        • Misswriter18

I think Elena is finding herself right now, but Damon is screwing that up. When Stefan lost his humanity, she realized that she’d be on her own. She learned to protect herself and she also went about things in her own way. But now, I feel like Damon could destroy the work that she’s done for herself.

I think that Elena will choose Stefan in the end, or take a break from both brothers after having some fun with Damon (we all know Damon ruins things with his actions). I think her independence is showing and she’ll want to keep it for a little while longer before truly choosing a brother to be with. I don’t like the idea of her being with a third party. Doesn’t seem to fit with the story as a whole.

Oh, and because I didn’t comment on it before, I love the CAKE ship! :)

    • moonshoespotter1712

it’s good for real life, but that is a bit boring on screen.

  • Laura Jones

    YAYY
i dont watch the secret circle but i LOVE the vampire diaries so im VERY excited for this!

  • Emily Z.

I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! And Jamie was The Famous Jette Jackson on Disney!!! Thank you guys so much! I have been waiting SO long for you guys to do this :)
I agree with you that I DO NOT like Stefan at all, I don’t like nice or mean Stefan but I LOVE DAMON!!!!!!!

    • https://twitter.com/#!/SonyaWrites Sonya Faria

I knew he was from something big!  We’re glad you enjoyed the first episode :)

    • Misswriter18

I seriously freaked out when I saw him and thought, “Gosh, now I wanna watch The Famous Jette Jackson.” :P

    • Misswriter18

I looked him up to make for sure and he wasn’t on Famous Jette Jackson. I thought he was like you did. But we were both wrong. :( He was on the shows: The Jamie Foxx Show, One On One, Veronica Mars and Meet The Browns.

Lee Thompson Young was Jette Jackson.

  • another

are you guys foing to make book discussions?

    • http://hypable.com Selina

We’ve only got one person on the show who’s read some of the books, but we definitely want to do comparisons between the character/storylines in the books and TV shows at some point!

    • http://www.facebook.com/laurabyrnecristiano Laura Byrne Cristiano

I’m about half way through the first book. So I will be making some comparisons.

  • DreamNox58

I love The Secret Circle.  I’ve never seen the Vampire Diaries but I have a small feeling this may get me started on it.  I love Faye and all her drama, along with Cassie and Adam, Diana and Jake.  I just love all the drama, I might as well just say that.  However, I really like Cassie with Jake, it works for me.

    • https://twitter.com/#!/SonyaWrites Sonya Faria

Definitely check out the The Vampire Diaries! I think season 1 has quite a similar feel to season 1 of The Secret Circle!

    • http://www.facebook.com/laurabyrnecristiano Laura Byrne Cristiano

I’d love to know what you though of our shipping quadrangle.

    • Tucker

You Should! I haven’t seen Secret Circle, but Vampire Diaries is awesome!

  • Caroline Taylor078

Thanks so much for starting this podcast, I am just downloading it now and looking forward to it as these are 2 of myfave shows! I think there should be a Pretty Little Liars podcast!

  • Kat

Thank you Thank you!!! I love the idea of a Vd/Sc podcast!!

  • http://twitter.com/alittlebeat Mel

I haven’t seen The Secret Circle (though I’ve been meaning to, I need to catch up on all my other shows first though!) but I’ve heard good things about it. It helps that the same people who do The Vampire Diaries created it! Either way, I’ll definitely be a loyal follower of this podcast. I love all the podcasts that Hypable puts out and listen/subscribe on iTunes to each and every one. Thank you guys so much for creating this podcast, I’ve been looking for a good TVD podcast for a while now! :D

  • Trel

oooo i wanted to be a host I love The Secret Circle books and the show

  • Gaby

Love this new podcast. I am glad I have people who I can agree or disagree with on The Secret Circle! No one I know see it! Thanks girls!!!

  • http://twitter.com/llama_lover26 Alaina Grant

I was so excited to see that there was a podcast with the Vampire Diaries. I have not gotten into the Secret Circle, but this is leading me there. I really liked the show and just wanted to through out my thoughts. I was, and still am a Stelena shipper, but this new season has gotten me to love Damon as well. I think he needs to be a part of Elena’s life, but I haven’t jumped on the Delena ship yet. So this last episode got me really excited when Elena and Stefan had their moment. There is definatly something left in Stefan but I don’t think he wants to find it again because with all that comes all of the greif from all of the people he has killed and hurt. I think it will be a struggle for awhile with him. He has to weigh what is more important, his realtionship with elena and caring about other people like his brother, or living the ‘easier life’ with out all of the pain from the past. I also wanted to mention that the sock in the face at the end of the episode made me smile a little bacause there was finally some interaction between the brothers that has been absent while Stefan has been gone.

I also agree on the ideas you guys had about what is in the final coffin. I thought about it having something to do with Klaus’s mother too. I think in the first of Bonnie’s dreams, Klaus is in the coffin holding the locket neclace thing that was Rebeka’s then Elena’s. I think that is foreshadowing some witchy connection. And didn’t his mother have something to do with that neclace in the first place? I might be wrong. The original doppleganger is another idea that I hadn’t thought of. I can’t wait to see what/who is in there!

Lastly, I totally agree that there is something else the Maredith is holding back. Everyone in Mystic Falls has a backstory and some secrets somewhere. She must have a reason for coming back. I can’t wait for all of these storylines to unfold. Love the show and keep up the great work!

I finally got around to listening to the first episode. I love TVD, but dropped The Secret Circle after three episodes because it felt like an absolute chore to get through each week. So I’ll be listening to the first half of the podcast, anyway. Let me know when you do something with Supernatural ;)

As for your TVD discussion, there was a sad lack of the Alaric/Damon bromance! That’s my absolute favorite part of the show and this episode was rife with good bromance moments; this was really the first episode Ric didn’t seem angry with Damon after the whole killing him fiasco, too. I love that Damon is both wary of Meredith for Ric’s sake and also seems a bit jealous. Their conversation in Alaric’s apartment? Golden. Cute boys are cute.

On the shipping side, I love Damon as a character and think he has an interesting dynamic with Elena, but I’m firmly Stelena. Damon’s too much of a wild card for any kind of healthy relationship with Elena, I think. I see them as having an intense but short fling that ends with Elena either on her own of back Stefan. But it’s going to take Stefan realizing that while he’s done some horrible things he doesn’t think are forgivable (which is why I think he’s pushing Elena away; he sees her as innocent and wants to protect her from his dark side. But him realizing she’s changed and gotten tougher gives him license *not* to protect her as much as he might think she needs), he can still come back from it. If Stefan makes that choice to come back from the brink and toe the company line again, I see Elena supporting him in that and staying with him.

Thanks for the podcast, ladies :)

  • Bridget

yay!! love vampire diaries! every friday morning, my friend and I see each other at school and go into a whole discussion about the episode the night before. anyway, i really like the idea of the coffin being for clause, especially because during the promo we see for the next episode there’s a spot where bonnie is screaming and there is an empty coffin behind her. of course it could be something totally different, like the scene after whoever’s in the coffin escapes, but i like that idea.

  • moonshoespotter1712

:) carolaus!! hahaha, and i love elijah.

  • http://twitter.com/JessEntertainMe Jessica Cleveland

Still have 2 minutes in the shows to listen to but like, it slightly kills me that know one has read the books. I’ve read below that some of you are working on that and  I’m pleased. I feel like it’ll help under stand the show a bit more, even though the show is, for the most part, completely different.

Alsoo, a complete coven is 12 in the books, I think that during writting the scrip it was hard to remind themselves that they changed it. I like the idea of 12 people to a coven and wished they had kept with that. Also wish they had the same characters in the book as well.

As for Faye being the other child I really hope thats not so. I’m more leaning towards the Melissa angel then Feye or Diana. Faye in the books winds up teaming up with black John and so I’m hoping that follows onto the show. Also, as Melissa was visting her dad, which we don’t know what he looks like and weren’t told is the rest of the circle knows what he looks like, its possible that Mels dad is Blackwell..

Just some of my thoughts, Hopefully they make sense lol. (I know there is a new episode tonight so maybe we’ll find out everything we want to know!?)

Finally! Someone created a TVD podcast! I LOVE listening to podcasts and I am sure this TVD/TSC podcast would allow me to pause and reflect the episode in detail. Thank you so much for doing this!
