WhoHype is the latest addition to the Hypable podcasting network. The show is dedicated to in-depth discussion about the Doctor Who universe: show and cast commentary, filming locations, rumors, tie-in video games/other products, spin-off series and more. Realizing that not every fan wants to know everything, we even have a specially marked spoiler section so listeners can skip around that information if they wish.

The four hosts of the show are from around the globe: the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Hypable’s regular Doctor Who writers, Laura Byrne-Cristiano and Harri Sargeant, lead the discussion with two additional Doctor Who fans from the staff joining us: Jennifer Lamoureux and Natalie Fisher.

– The four hosts Laura, Harri, Jen and Natalie begin by introducing themselves, and explain how they each got sucked into Doctor Who
The spoiler policy is explained, and then we talk about the hosts’ history with the series, the series’ high points for us
- We proceed with an in-depth discussion of favorite:

  • Doctors
  • Companions
  • Episodes
  • Dialogue Exchanges
  • Monsters

- With our filming update we cover what we know so far from the BBC
-Meet the new Companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman. What do we know of her career and connections
– Next we channel our inner-River Song and declare *Spoilers*, so listeners can hit pause and then skip to the 1:03.45 mark to avoid them if they wish
– Back from our spoilery discussion we delve into the mind of Steven Moffat (or at least we attempt to tap a molecule) and predict what could be so different about the new Companion and why she is cloaked in utter secrecy.

Most importantly, we want you hear from you the listener. What do you want us to discuss? What do you think about the filming rumors and our predictions?

You can contribute your theories and thoughts to the next episode of the podcast by commenting on this post, emailing or tweeting us @whohype

    • LauraBC

Also after you get to a certain point you have to watch Torchwood

      • Oscar

Do you? I watched two episodes of Torchwood and decided I didn’t like it… I don’t think it’s necessary for understanding of what’s going on.

        • Lauracristiano

Not “have to” in the sense of you miss storyline, but I really love that series. I’d encourage you to watch more you really get hooked in by the relationships. The found their stride by episode 6 called Countryside.  Series 2 was fabulous and after that Series 3 is most people’s favorite.

      • rebekah

Oh this reminds me I need to go back to and start watching it again. I caught the first episode and loved it. ahh i have so many shows I need to catch up on lol

  • Karen Rought

This was a great episode, guys! I’m beyond excited for this podcast!!!

  • Domi Ed

Ugh I am still catching up. I just finished episode 10 (Blink) season 3.
I have been avoiding all DW news. I don’t want spoilers…
I don’t think I even know what Matt Smith sounds like.

So I’ll subscribe to the podcast but I can’t listen yet.

  • Mapthestars

You messed up on a fact. you were talking about the filming of Amy and Rory’s final episode, and the photos of were Amy is approaching as angel to be touched. one of you brought up the point that when you are touched by an angel you are randomly transported to a different place and time. This isn’t right. Each angel send their victim to the same place and year. This was why Billy Shipton was sent to New York 1969 – the same place Martha and The Doctor are – He touched the same angel. The Doctor even tells him this. So therefor, as long as Amy is positive she is approaching the same angel that took Rory, she’ll end up in the same place. Time code: 56:30

    • AshleyKay

Here I was getting ready to post this same thing! :)

    • LauraBC

Ah you make a good point! Totally including this in our next episode and will give you a shout out!

      • Mapthestars

Cool, thanks. Nice podcast by the way, I’ve been waiting for the doctor who podcast to come along.

    • Guest

:/ That part about Rory and Amy approaching an angel in their last episode was a spoiler. I even turned off the show at the spoiler part to avoid that! I guess the comments section isn’t safe…

  • Mdrich12

I can’t find it on iTunes?

    • Kate

      See Important Note…

    • LauraBC

It will be there within 48 hours or so (see note at the bottom of the entry)

  • Matthewhpg

    For dialogue exchanges:
Lily: Is this place real? Or is this Fairyland?
Doctor: Fairyland? Oh, grow up, Lily! Fairyland looks completely different.

    • rebekah

Oh! isn’t that from the 2011 Christmas special? lol I just watched that episode! I haven’t been able to catch up on that episode until now lol I found that little bit amusing too.

  • Janeth Gutierrez

Just finished listening. Great job! I had been looking forward to a DW podcast from hypable for a while. Can’t wait for the next one!

  • j_oreilly

That was brilliant! I’ve been waiting for this since the initial announcement and I have checked hypable every day looking specifically for your first episode! The show was fantastic. I think it would be cool to have a news section (similar to what Muglecast does). It could be about filming, release dates, cons, and other miscellaneous who news.
    Once again, wonderful job! :)

  • Matthew Potter

Almost through listening and thus far it’s great! I’m quite excited for this podcast, good job guys.
I love all of the actors on Game of Thrones and think it would be great for more of them to make appearances on Doctor Who. (so far I think we’ve had ‘Jorah’, ‘Gendry’, and ‘Viscerys’ in various episodes. Also Finn Jones (Loras) was in Sarah Jane Adventures). Richard Madden should definitely guest star sometime with Jenna Louise-Coleman.

    • NatalieFisher

Yeah, Harry Lloyd (Viserys) was in one of my fave episodes!!

  • Matthewhpg

WhoHype: Fifty years of time and space, everything the Doctor ever did or will do, where do you want to start?

    • NatalieFisher

      Love it.

  • Dlmarvin05

My ringtone is the 10th doctor’s opening theme :) <3

  • Dlmarvin05

Btw, that is EXACTLY how I felt about Donna!
Like, no better words could be said! You pinpointed my feelings exactly. I’m glad I’m not the only one :)

    • Dlmarvin05

Same opinion to Martha too, goodness gracious -.-

  • Dlmarvin05

Natalie Fisher, just so I don’t sit and comment so much.
I pretty much share and love all your opinions!
Not that I don’t love other peoples, but I especially share pretty much all yours <3 Thank you :)

  • Shelby Walker

Great show, guys! Here are some things I’ve decided to write in about!

-I have the Tenth Doctor’s theme music as my ringtone and a Tenth Doctor/Rose wallpaper on my phone, and then I have a wallpaper on my laptop from the 1950s set episode with the Doctor and Rose looking cute on the motorbike.

-I want an Adipose plushie so bad! It’s so darn wrong how cute they are.

-I decided to compile my own list of favorites:

Doctor: Tenth. I adore David Tennant and the way he delivered tricky lines. I feel like his version of the Doctor had emotions that were more understandable and I felt connected to him because of his love of humanity.

Companion: It’s a tie between Rose and Donna. I loved the Rose seasons because of the love story and her attitude (although, I disliked how she kept leading Mickey on…). And Donna… well, she was just brilliant and had that same sort of line delivery. I absolutely disliked Martha. She fell for the Doctor too fast and I don’t think she had any redeeming qualities.

Episodes: “End of Time (1&2)”. Brilliant and heartbreaking. “Midnight”. I find people who mimic and copy my words terribly annoying, but that episode really creeped me out. Fantastic character-driven episode. “Doomsday”. Well, that was just a depressing episode. “Journey’s End” for two reasons: Doctor Donna and Rose finally being able to be with the Doctor. “The Big Bang”. I loved this one because of Rory and just how amazing the story became. I never thought it’d all be worked out!

Dialogue Exchange: I picked only one.

The Doctor: The last time, with Martha, it got complicated. And that was all my fault. I just want a mate.
Donna: You just want to mate?
The Doctor: I just want *a* mate!
Donna: You’re not matin’ with me Sunshine!
The Doctor: A mate! I want *a* mate!
Donna: Well, just as well, because I’m not having any of that nonsense! I
mean, you’re just a long streak of nothing, y’know, alien nothing!

Monsters/Aliens: The Weeping Angels, The Ood, and “Midnight”

-I think it’d be awesome if the new companion were Jenny!

  • AnnaTveit

I’ve been waiting for this podcast for a long time. So happy that it’s finally here! Thank you to the hosts :)

  • Caitlin Walsh

I was so excited to listen to this! So impressive that you got Australia, UK and US all together as a convo, and not pre-taped.  One question though Where would we discuss the spoilery info from the podcast?

    *bows before the awesomeness*

    • LauraBC

probably best to shoot us an email a2

  • Janeth Gutierrez

Awww @ all the Martha hate (or dislike), I, personally, love her, she’s not my favorite (Rose takes that spot) but I love all the companions, some just more than others. I think they’ve all brought something to the show. & like the Doctor said, he only chooses the best & they’ve all been the best of him.

& I’ll add that my phone’s ringtone is the theme music as well, while my text/notifications tone is the Tardis.

& for all of you who say that you want an Adipose plushie, there’s an Adipose stress toy, it’s not a plushie but still really cute! My best friend got me it for christmas & I love it.

    • LauraBC

I have to say I don’t dislike Martha, but I love Donna. Martha has some of my favorite episodes. I think she’s a stand out in the entire Family of Blood 2-parter. I also love her crossover on Torchwood

      • Janeth Gutierrez

From everything you said during the podcast, I seem to agree with you the most lol. I love Donna as well, she’s my second favorite companion.
I agree that she really was a stand out in Human Nature/Family of Blood, not to mention the fact that she walked the Earth to save everyone, then went on to help her family heal from the year that never was.

& I did also love seeing her in Torchwood. That was one of the things I was looking forward to seeing the most when I first started watching Torchwood.

  • Amey Wakeford

Donna Noble was hands down the best companion, no ulterior motives from her, she was just his friend and a thumping good one at that!

  • Frankie94

About time there was some Aussie representation, haha! I haven’t yet listened to the episode, but it’s downloading right now. I am such a keen bean for this!

  • Liz

Really liked the first episode! Thanks for finally doing a DW podcast.

  • Anja845

    Hey guys, great podcast!

So a little of my input, if anyone cares:

    – My ringtone in ‘I am the Doctor’ and I got the TARDIS sound for texts
    – I am a proud owner of a TARDIS mug (thanks to my awesome friend who got it for me for my birthday)

    – 10 will always be my Doctor, but I still very much love 9 and 11 (I’m a bad fan, I still hadn’t come around to watching the original series)
    – My favourite companion is Rose (sorry Harry, I’m a sucker for romance), tough I absolutely adore Rory, he’s completely awesome and everything he does is just so great and his whole character developtment is amazing. I love Donna and her relationship with The Doctor, I think she’s brilliant. Also her grandpa Wilfred is badass. Jack is…well, Jack. At the beginning I didn’t like Amy at all and I still sometimes don’t, but then on the other occasions she’s just…wow. As for River Song, I can understand why some people don’t like her at all and find her annoying, but I never had a problem with her. So I guess that leaves Martha. I was never quite fond of her, she’s definetely my least favourite companion, but the episodes she was in are one of my favourites.
    – Blink, of course. I actually find this a little weird/funny, that Blink is such a popular episode, when The Doctor really isn’t much in it. I also love the one where The Doctor is human and the one with Shakespeare (I swear it’s not only because of the Harry Potter references). In general I really like the historical episodes, Vincent and The Doctor is one of my favourites, it just so beatiful. End of time. I cry every time. Okay I better stop now, there’s so many good ones I could go all day.
    – The same goes for quotes, there are so many brilliant ones, the one in my mind right now is ˝Almost every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark. But they’re wrong- cos it’s not irrational.˝ That one just gave me chills.
    – Monsters: hands down the weeping angels.

I’m pretty sure I had more things to say, but I listened to the podcast yesterday and my memory is bad, sorry. I remember one of you said something about Iain Glen, who aslo plays in Game of Thrones, about recognizing him for his voice? The same happened to me :)

Oooh the new companion! I think she’ll be human, but I really hope she’ll be from the past. Or maybe the future? If she turns out to be Jenny, that’d be great too.

Anyway, great first episode, keep up the good work, your voices are lovely :)

Oh, I’m also really sorry about any grammar and spelling mistakes, English is not my first language.

    •!/HarriFSargeant Harri Sargeant

Made perfect sense to me, thank you for the lovely feedback and sharing your favourites! It’s so interesting how every fan likes different combinations and though two people can agree entirely on one character, their opinions can be so different on another!

  • Meredith Chelsea Sims

I first started watching Doctor Who last summer when I saw it on Netflix and it was hard to get into it at first but then I think when I got into the second season I got into the crazy world of Doctor Who.

I don’t have any items that are Doctor Who related. I love to listen to the music from the show. I believe that the music drives the show for me. And I listen to Chameleon Circuit which makes songs about Doctor Who.

My favorite Doctor is the 11th Doctor. At first I loved David because he was so funny and was so dramatic but the moment in the Eleventh Hour when Matt was up and close with the Atraxi and you see the cycle of every doctor and you see Matt coming through David’s face and he says “Hello, I’m the Doctor.” it blew me over and I was ready from that moment to see what Matt Smith had to offer. He is a child at heart and during A Good Man Goes to War I was actually afraid of him because you don’t really see the Doctor that angry and seeing him in that state of mind sends sivers down my spine every time I watch that episode.

My favorite companion is Rory. You get to see the growth of him being all innocent and scared that he would actually losing Amy to the Doctor to the Last Centurion. And, I want to find a guy like Rory in the near future (hopefully)

Dialogue Exchanges….when the Doctor was walking to Angel Bob scared the living crap out of me. During Blink how Sally and the Doctor communicated was interesting. I love how the writers in the beginning for the fifth series planted clues about The Silence and, how The Silence must fall.
Monsters. The Silence….the fact you see them and forget them and they can be anywhere. And, Silence will fall when the last question is answered Doctor Who? I wonder how long the Silence will actually be apart of the series and I wonder do the writers know how the whole Doctor Who will end????
I love the podcast and keep up the great work.

  • Simone

Such an absolutely fantastic start :D although I’ve come to expect that from Hypable. I was basically grinning and nostalgic through the entirety of the favourites segment, and some of your favourites and similar to mine. Just to add  the input mine are…

Doctor: I have to go with 11 for the same reasons as you guys; he’s quirky, alien, emotional, lonely, loving, childish, old, dark and innocent – basically everything I could ask for

Companions: I have to go with Amy or the Ponds as a collective if I may. I love how she is feisty and emminates so much girl power and independence, yet underneath she is so vulnerable. There are few companions that have found a place in the Doctor’s heart as much as she was. Rory is first equal or second. He is such a lovable guy, and he represents normality and conscience to balance out The Doctor and Amy’s crazy, something the trio desperately needs at times. He’s the kind of character you can’t help but root for.

Episodes: Blink – the brilliance of this episode kind of speaks for itself. The Sound Of Drums – The Master is just brilliant, and I enjoy him so much. The Girl Who Waited – I can’t explain it, I just loved everything about this. The Eleventh Hour – it’s the episode that made me fall in love with the show and the 11th Doctor, plus it has one of his most badass speeches of the series. Closing Time – mostly because of the same hilarious dialogue Natalie mentioned, so amazing.

Dialogue: I could type up a novel’s worth of them but here’s one:
“There’s one thing you never put in a trap. If you’re smart, if you value your continued existence, if you have any plans about seeing tomorrow, there is one thing you never, ever put in a trap. Bob: And what would that be, sir? The Doctor: [aiming gun upwards] Me.”

    Monster: Weeping Angels, ’nuff said

    • Sami Johnson

This is pretty much everything I was going to say. Totally agree with it all!

  • Oscar the Grouch, Time Lord

Uh, idea. It’s kinda strange, but it’s something I would enjoy, at least: Discussing Murray Gold’s score for the show. Which episodes you think had the best music, which of the Doctor’s themes you like best (I think there are about five), or just whether you think the music is good or bad and why. As someone who started watching the show simply because of the score, I at least would be happy to hear some discussion on it.

    • LauraBC

Fantastic topic! In fact I have the score for series four! Our intro music for the podcast is actually a mashup of Muse’s uprising overlayed with the series 1 score.

      • Oscar

Ooh! Well then, another idea connected to this is looking at which series you think has the best music and why. For example, I think Murray Gold peaked (and hasn’t dropped yet) in musical talent in Series 5, while I know lots of people prefer his stuff from Series 4 and the Specials, and think the music deteriorated from then onwards. But is that because Series 5 is also my first and favourite series, and 11 is my favourite Doctor? Or, considering the fact that I watched the show because of ‘I Am the Doctor’, is it the other way around? It’s always been a fascinating topic for me (particularly as my sister is going to be doing film composition in university).

    • NatalieFisher

Song for Ten literally made me sob like a child for my first, like, 20 listens of it.

      • Oscar

I actually don’t remember that one… but the Greatest Story Never Told and The Life and Death of Amy Pond get me every time – and, of course, the Mad Man in a Box.

  • Samuel

Great first episode! It would be interesting at some point to hear discussion about the two respective writers – Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat and how they compare.

    • LauraBC

       Absolutely! Excellent idea!

  • Julie

Thanks for starting this podcast – I am going to love listening to it after each episode to hear your discussion of what just happened!

Question: will there be a delay between the time that the show is aired in England, versus the time the show is aired in the United States? I seem to recall that in the past, the U.S. was months behind England in being able to view new episodes.  If that is the case this season, how are you going to handle it on your podcast?  Will you discuss episodes in detail when they are shown in England, even though U.S. audiences will not have watched it yet?

    • LauraBC

Well last season, unlike series 1 & 2 and don’t even get me started on the Specials, the BBC has seemed to (at least temporarily) has gotten their heads out of their backsides and aired Doctor Who in the USA the same day as the UK. Granted a time differential of roughly tea time UK and 8:00pm or so east coast USA. We anticipate that being the case again this year. So…there shouldn’t be a huge effect on podcast recording. Our biggest challenge remains Coordinating USA/UK/Australia so no one is recording at 3:00am!

  • Cheryll

I am a total Doctor Who fan, ever since the series restarted with Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, and now Matt Smith. Can’t get enough of it and I am now impatiently waiting for the return of the new series!! Hopefully your podcasts will see me through until then :) I listen to a few other Hypable podcasts and have no doubt that this one will be just as superb.

My favorite Doctor was definitely David Tennant and I will have to say Catherine Tate would have been my favorite companion. I love Catherine’s role because she just wasn’t in love with the doctor, like the previous two.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say every week.

  • rebekah

I just have to say I’ve been waiting so long for a doctor who podcast from hypable and I’m so glad it’s finally here!! :) I’m glad to see that Laura and Jen are on this podcast too. I’m familiar with them from the secret diaries podcast!

It’s funny because I’ve been a fan of doctor who since I was little but didn’t know that I was a fan. I would watch it on PBS as a little kid but I never knew that the show I was watching was Doctor Who. I just recently learned that this was the very first show I fell in love with. But as a little kid all I knew was that there was some old guy running around like a mad man inside this weird ship thing with lights and he went on come cool adventures. I was completely fascinated as a child with it. lol I remember one day I turned on the tv and waited for my favorite show to come on but it didn’t come on. I was so disappointed. :( As a kid you don’t know what time shows come on or that times change or that they just stop showing it. So I never saw it again and didn’t even know what it was called. Then recently I decided I’d start watching this show called Doctor Who. The show was mid season in series 5 and people seemed to be pretty excited about it. I started catching up and I loved it. I did some research on the other doctors and through that it finally hit me! This was the show that I loved and I watched as a kid! lol Sometimes I would think what was that show I used to like as a kid and now I know!! I just have to figure out which doctor it was that I watched. My brain is still a little fuzzy as to which doctor it was.

I’ve only seen series 5 & 6 with Matt Smith as the eleventh doctor and I love Matt Smith as the doctor. I plan to go back and start watching series 1 with the ninth doctor soon. So far I’ve seen 2 episodes of series 1 and I’m liking it.

Anyway great podcast! I just listened to this one over the weekend and I see that episode 2 is out already. I can’t wait to hear it and I look forward to more episodes especially with the next series starting in the fall.
