Roald Dahl Discussion: Who was he?
-Dahl turns 100 this month! (Check out our coverage.)
-He was a great children’s author
-Dahl was a novelist, poet, screenwriter, and fighter pilot (why not!)
-He is considered one of the greatest storytellers of the 20th century
-Dahl has a reputation for being very anti-Semitic and anti-Jerusalem

What are some of Dahl’s books?
-Brittany talks about how terrifying The Witches was as a child
-Kristen read The BFG for some accelerated reading points
-Karen chooses George’s Marvelous Medicine, a very, very tall tale
-Jen loves Matilda
-Kristen and Brittany read a bunch of his adult work, which is… interesting

Best adaptations
-Brittany used to love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but she has since come to her senses
-But Willy Wonka terrified her
WITCHES IS THE BEST
-Karen loves, loves, loves the original Willy Wonka
-To be clear, Karen does NOT LIKE James and the Giant Peach
-Brittany looked like Mara Wilson as a child
-Kristen loves Matilda, and the spectrum of sour and sweet between Miss Trunchbull and Ms. Honey
-The BFG this summer is a close second for a good balance of animation and reality
-Jen agrees that these films capture the spirit of childhood and adventure and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is awful

Did you know…
-Are these stories too scary for children?
-He wrote a James Bond script and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
-Dahl had a hand in creating Willy Wonka script but he missed his deadline
