Four-time James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan went out of his way to suggest that the 007 series will never have a gay Bond due to the producer.
Speaking to Details in support of his new film No Escape, Brosnan was asked about the possibility of a gay James Bond after touching on Ireland’s recent legalization of gay marriage.
“Sure. Why not?” he said before pausing “thoughtfully,” in Detail’s words, and providing a lengthier answer.
“Actually, I don’t know how it would work,” he said. “I don’t think Barbara [Broccoli, the James Bond producer] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.”
Brosnan then suggested that James Bond should first cast a black actor to play the agent. “Let’s start with a great black actor being James Bond. Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet.”
It seems like Brosnan went out of his way to blame the series’ producer for the lack of a gay James Bond, doesn’t it? While a character’s sexuality usually doesn’t matter, we all know that a big aspect of the 007 films are the “Bond girls”. Wouldn’t a gay James Bond have to have some screen time with his “Bond boys”?
Maybe this is why Barbara Broccoli (best last name ever) is hesitant about a gay Bond. The character is one of the most well-known in film history, and seeing him portrayed as a gay man would be an unpleasant shock to macho audiences.
Just another reminder that acceptance is still an issue in the world.
As for Idris Elba as Bond, Brosnan sounds like he’s making a guess based on recent reports. There’ve been persistent rumors over the past few years suggesting that Idris could be up for Bond whenever Daniel Craig steps down.
The next 007 film, Spectre, opens in theaters this November. Watch the trailer now!
