Penny Dreadful had it’s first Comic-Con panel yesterday and it was one of the funniest, most interesting panels we’ve seen at the convention. Check out our top favorite moments to know why!
Aisha Tyler and John Logan
As a superfan of Penny Dreadful, Aisha Tyler was asked to moderate the panel at San Diego Comic-Con this year and she did a wonderful job. She was beyond excited to be there, and it definitely showed! It was great being able to see the moderator of the panel be almost more excited than some of the fans in the audience.
In addition to her wonderful presence, John Logan (the show’s creator) was also at the panel along with Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney and Harry Treadaway. What really made us smile, though, was when Logan explained that prior to this he was always a Comic-Con goer in the audience, and in the exhibit hall – which made us happy to realize that prior to being celebrities, Aisha and John are first and foremost also fans.
More character backgrounds
Logan explained during the panel that he would like to see more episodes like episode 5, “Closer Than Sisters”, where he will get to explore the background of each character on the show. This show has a been a work in progress for almost a decade, so Logan made sure to let us know that he has quite the interesting backstory for the majority of these characters, and specifically Ethan.
When Tyler asked Logan if Ethan was a bitten werewolf or one who’s born that way, he says that will be a conversation to be discussed at a later time, hinting that we will hopefully find out in season 2.
Open discussions about sexuality
One of the most shocking moments of the show was, no doubt, the moment Ethan and Dorian got together. When asked about this, Logan had a very interesting opinion, stating “As a gay man I felt it would be wrong to not portray all sorts of sexuality on the show.”
Logan doesn’t want us to focus solely on Dorian and Ethan and if they’re going to be getting into a relationship, because it’s irrelevant. He says that human beings live in the moment that is true for them, and relationships evolve, so while we’re sure that moment isn’t going to be swept under the rug we should remember that this isn’t a show about who sleeps with who and why, it’s about the monsters beneath us all.
Season 2 teases
Of course, as with any Comic-Con panel, we got some good teases about Penny Dreadful season 2. Having spent, literally, years on this show, Logan has such a large theology and plan for it. Next season we will see less character building and more of our favorite characters entering a more threatening theological world.
Oh, and remember Madam Kali from the the seance? Well, she’s going to be the antagonist for season 2! In fact, there was a deleted scene from the season finale that they decided to move over to the season 2 premiere, which shows us a scarier version of Madam Kali than we’ve ever seen. Expect her to bring some evil into Vanessa Ives’ life!
