Paul Bettany, best known in the Marvel universe for voicing Tony Stark’s best A.I pal Jarvis, will be playing The Vision in Marvel’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron production begins next month and while James Spader will be playing the villain, Ultron, Bettany will be playing an android created by him: The Vision.
The Vision was intended to be one of Ultron’s minions but he turns against him and teams with the Avengers. The Daily Mail first reported the rumor that Bettany would be playing The Vision in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Variety confirmed the report.
The Vision was created in the comics by Ultron, but many fans wondered whether Ultron would actually turn out to be an angry Jarvis in The Avengers sequel after Avengers animatics artist Federico D’Alessandro released some unused videos which showed he was disgruntled to find out he was becoming more intelligent than Tony Stark.
The videos were later taken down, which fueled the rumor even more that Bettany’s character would turn into The Avengers: Age of Ultron’s main villain. While he won’t be Ultron, The Vision is certainly an essential part of the Ultron storyline.
Ultron calls The Vision a “synthezoid,” which he intended to use against his creator, Dr. Henry Pym (Ant-Man) and Pym’s wife (Wasp). Ultron would later send his robotic servant to lead the Avengers into a trap.
Wasp is the first to person to encounter the “synthezoid,” and describes it as a “vision” while she’s trying to escape. After he adopts the new name, The Vision is then convinced by the Avengers to turn against Ultron and help them destroy his creator.
What’s truly great about this news is that Bettany will finally get to be on screen after only hearing his voice in three Iron Man films and The Avengers. He’s played an incredible part as J.A.R.V.I.S. and has a massive fan base due in no small part to his incredible voice and sense of humor as Tony’s A.I. sidekick.
It’s not yet known exactly how J.A.R.V.I.S. turns into The Vision, but director Joss Whedon has previously said that he’s creating an entirely different origin story for Ultron and we’re sure he’ll come up with an interesting way to transform Bettany’s previous character into his new one. A simple virus created by Ultron could infiltrate Iron Man’s suit and cause Vision to be created.
The British newspaper reports that Bettany was recently seen with Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner at Shepperton Studios in London where he was meeting with Joss Whedon.
The actor was doing a “series of costume, hair and make-up tests and worked with stuntmen and armourers.” Bettany was also seen with make-up artists who were creating “Vision’s chalk-white complexion,” despite the character having red skin in the comic.
We’re ecstatic that he’ll finally be on screen, at least we hope he’ll be able to do the motion capture for the character as well as voicing the role. We’ll be sure to include Marvel or Bettany’s comments concerning the announcement when they’re released.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron will be hitting theaters May 1, 2015.
