The first trailer for Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Toro’s first film in five years, has arrived online, giving us a look at his sci-fi epic.
Set for a release amidst a crowded blockbuster field summer, Pacific Rim is an original story pitting robots and monsters against themselves in predictably grand fashion. Take a look at the trailer below, which is set to play in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey this weekend.
Featuring a stellar cast that includes Idris Elba (Prometheus), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom) and Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), the story follows a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi), who are teamed to operate of a massive robot designed to fight creatures known as Kaiju.
We’ll surely be seeing a lot more from Pacific Rim in terms of marketing in the coming months, although right now it’s a bit too early to judge. Obviously Del Toro’s involvement and the impressive cast are enough to get your hopes up, but the effects don’t appear to be fully complete yet, which makes it a bit hard to judge from such an effects-heavy trailer.
Also be sure to take a look at this just-released poster for Pacific Rim:
Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) wrote the script for Pacific Rim, which Warner Bros. is scheduling for a 3D release July 12, 2013.
