A few weeks ago we reported on OUYA’s incredible entry into the Kickstarter world. The Android console, whose USP is its “open” nature, is expected to retail at only $99.
63,416 people have backed the project, pledging a total of $8,596,475 – far exceeding OUYA’s initial Kickstarter target, which was subsequently raised to $950,000.
In recent days the team behind OUYA has also announced several partnerships. Hawken and Final Fantasy III will be released on the new console, with further Final Fantasy installments to come. Robotki is developing a “post-zombie-apocalyptic game” called Human Element, that will be released for the OUYA prior to other platforms. U4iA Games, founded by the veterans behind Guitar Hero and Call of Duty, will bring their first person shooter, Offensive Combat, to the OUYA. OnLive will also be available on the OUYA. Active discussions with Namco Bandai (the publisher behind Tekken, Pac-Man, Soulcalibur and many more) are also underway.
Aside from gaming, partnerships have been forged between OUYA and VEVO, iHeartRadio (a customisable online radio service for U.S. users, similar to Last.fm), TuneIn (an international radio service) and media players XBMC and Plex.
Support has been added for up to four controllers – but if you want all four, you’re going to have to spend an extra $90 when the console retails.
Developers who’ve pledged will get their hands on OUYA by December, but the rest of us will have to wait until March 2013 to see if OUYA can live up to its promise.
