Outlander fans are articulate, passionate, and definitely opinionated. All of this is a good thing. They have very firm ideas about what are some key things they want to see during the rest of season 1.
Last week we talked to a group that we are dubbing our Outlander superfans. These fans have taken their Outlander love to the next level by starting an Outlander-centric podcast, website, or Twitter handle. These are fans who engage tens of thousands of fans in lively discussion and debate on all things Outlander.
So here’s what they think is going to be key going into the second half of season 1. Keep in mind if you are not a book reader, there are going to be some mild spoilers below.
Claire’s rescue
Many fans are just dying to see the very first, current timeline confrontation between Captain Jack Randall and Jamie Fraser. These two have crossed paths in the past, with Randall being the one who scarred Jamie’s back, almost killing him. How is Jamie going to get Claire out of Black Jack’s clutches? Yesterday we had footage that showed us how he accessed the window.
Superfan Summer from Outlander Podcast says, “I’m looking forward to Jamie no longer being stuck in that window.”
@RoxfromtheRidge also adds, “I’m dying for the opening scene because we’ve all waited so long.” She’s also very supportive of what the Outlander team has accomplished so far, and how much they embrace the fans. “It’s marvelous that the cast and crew interact so much with the fans, on Twitter especially. I don’t think I would’ve been such an ardent fan if they had ignored all my memes and art work. The fans that do devote hours to fan art etc. do it to express their love of the show, so for the people involved to actually recognize that (and it’s pretty rare) is wonderful and unexpected. It is THE best form of publicity I can think of in this day and age.”
The fallout from Claire’s rescue
Without spoiling exactly what that fallout is, in case there are non-book readers stumbling upon this, let’s just say Claire got captured because she didn’t stay hidden as she was told. Her actions not only put her life, but the lives of the Highlanders on the road with her at risk. There needs to be justice, 18th century justice, for putting others at risk.
Sue, our superfan behind the @DonasTheHorse Twitter account is looking forward to the retribution scene, but also “the make up sex (that follows).”
Donas himself also has an opinion about what he wants to see. “Really Human? You have to ask? Ugh …. ME!!!!” He also has a suggestion for the Starz PR team, “I have a bone to pick with Starz …When do I get MY face on a bus???”
Return to Castle Leoch
Our weary travelers have to stop collecting taxes and get off the road sometime. They are going to return to the castle, which will be interesting to see how the residents, especially Laoghaire, treat the newlyweds.
Carol of My Outlander Purgatory says, “My favorite scene in the original Outlander book is where Claire gets jealous that Jamie is gone so long when he’s left her in the bed chamber after they get back to Leoch. She’s exhausted, she’s dirty, she’s hungry, yet she’s consumed with wonder about his whereabouts, whether he’s with Laoghaire, and what both of those factors mean when it comes to her place in the 18th century. She’s finally coming around and realizing she truly loves this man. There is so much angst in their arguing when Jamie returns; and even more in their lovemaking. Again – gooseflesh. If Jamie doesna say, ‘I canna be gentle about it,’ I may have to publish an open letter to Sam Heughan, asking him to record himself saying it.”
The climatic last quarter
Again, without us spoiling too much, the back end of season one is going to be intense. There is a showdown with Black Jack Randall brewing, and the cost will be unsurprisingly high. Every single one of our superfans mentioned this as to what they are dying to see, perhaps through partly covered eyes. In some senses, it can be more intense if you know what is coming.
Tracey from My Outlander Purgatory says, “Well, I don’t want to spoil anything for those who have not read the book… so let’s just say that I’m really curious to see how the last— say, quarter of the book is going to go down in TV form. I have a feeling that Claire will be more actively involved in what happens. Hopefully that makes sense to the book readers! And also, there’s a little scene at a fence at Lallybroch — readers know what I mean — that I can’t wait to see. It’s one of my favorites in the book!”
