Outlander’s second episode is tonight. Claire and the highlanders finally get to their destination: Castle Leoch
Book fans will be happy to know that one of the fist people Claire encounters at Castle Leoch is the indomitable Mrs. Fitz. She is played with great relish by Annette Badland. If you are a Doctor Who fan and are plagued with wondering, “Where have I heard the voice before?”, think Raxacoricofallapatorian and you’ll have some bonus laughs.
Claire will also meet for the very first time the Laird (ruling lord) of Castle Leoch, Colum MacKenzie. Colum MacKenzie, played by Gary Lewis, is the older brother of Dougal, the highlander who was in charge of the raiding party that Claire has been traveling with. Although Dougal has a physical deformity that renders him unable to ride or fight with a sword, he is by no means incapable. Much like Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones, Colum’s greatest asset is his shrewd mind. He can out think almost anyone.
Another female character to make her debut tonight is the mysterious Geillis Duncan, played by Lotte Verbeek. Geillis, without question, stands out from the rest of those in Castle Leoch. She doesn’t seem to look at Claire as suspiciously as the others. In a world where nothing is certain, can Claire trust Geillis?
Lastly, another character makes her debut tonight. Laoghaire MacKenzie, played by Nell Hudson, is briefly seen. Hudson wins the prize for playing the character whose name everyone (including die hard fans) mispronounces. When we met her on the red carpet, she was keen to make known that her character’s name isn’t pronounced “leg-hairy” or “leg-whore”. It’s pronounced “leery”.
Just in case fans are concerned that we won’t be seeing Jamie this week, don’t worry, there is plenty of that too. In fact, there are at least two scenes and a flashback straight from the book that should delight readers. Non-readers, don’t worry, you’ll be fascinated too as who Jamie is starts to unravel.
Outlander airs tonight on Starz 9:00 ET/PT
