Jenji Kohan’s Orange is the New Black, arguably one of summer’s best television shows, has just released its third season on Netflix!
The show was scheduled for a release at 3:01 a.m. eastern on Friday morning, but Netflix used their OITNB fan event “OrangeCon” in New York this evening to announce that season 3 was being released six hours early. It’s kind of like that House of Cards early release, but this time it’s on purpose.
There are fourteen episodes in the third outing making it the longest season so far, and the first episode is titled “Mother’s Day.”
Before you get going, you may need a brief reminder concerning what happened at the end of season 2. Here are a few highlights:
– By the end of the season, all of the inmates at Litchfield wanted to take down Vee, the sophomore season’s cocaine-pushing villain. Earlier in the season Vee had enlisted Crazy Eyes to take down her former ally Red, but thanks to a desire to do right by the inmates, Officer Sam helped the ladies point the blame back on Vee.
– Caputo caught on and began to help Piper expose Ms. Figueroa for the corrupt person that she is. Unfortunately for everyone, Figueroa managed to leave the gig nobly because the warden didn’t want a scandal on their hands (though giving a blow job to “Soda Can” wasn’t all too noble).
– Bennett came clean to Caputo about being the father of Diaz’s baby, but Joe, only two days into his new job as head of Litchfield, advised Bennett to not tell a soul about it.`Could Caputo already be on a trajectory similar to Figueroa’s? He seemed like he wanted to truly turn things around.
– Piper tasked Larry and Polly with reporting Alex for violating parole, causing her to end up in jail again. While we didn’t see her re-enter Litchfield, trailers for season 3 make it certain she’ll be back behind bars.
– Speaking of Larry and Polly, the two admitted to Piper that they slept with one another… and they’re now in love. This arc is probably not going to advance much further in season 3, as Jason Biggs previously confirmed that Larry does not appear in the new season.
– The season 2 finale came to an exciting conclusion when Rosa was given the inmate transportation van by Lorna so she could escape and live out her final weeks in peace before cancer took her away. As luck would have it, as Rosa was driving away she spotted and hit Vee, who was trying to make a run out of Litchfield. Vee is presumably dead.
