Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that Carrie Fisher will actually not be in Star Wars: Episode IX.
Kennedy made the definitive remark while speaking with ABC News this afternoon from Star Wars Celebration. The news is surprising, as Carrie’s brother Todd said recently that they gave Lucasfilm permission to use recent footage of her in the ninth installment.
“Sadly, Carrie will not be in nine,” Kennedy said. “We will see a lot of her in eight.”
Previous reports indicated that Carrie’s General Leia was to have a big role in Episode 9. It’s not yet clear if they’ll be writing out Leia, or if they’ll simply not return to her character after whatever happens in The Last Jedi. Watch Kennedy make her remarks below:

“Carrie is absolutely phenomenal in [The Last Jedi],” she said. “By the time we were well on our way on Episode 9 in our thoughts, we had not written the script yet, but we’ve regrouped, we started over again in January.”
“He was probably confused,” Kathleen said of Todd’s remarks.
