With vision warnings plastered all over the 3DS games and console boxes, Nintendo has announced today a 2DS that will take away more than just the handheld’s 3D capabilities.
The 2DS will be one flat slate, as opposed to the clamshell look of both the 3DS and its predecessor, the DS.
In explaining the move behind the redesign of their popular handheld, Nintendo told IGN “with the Nintendo 3DS, we were clear to parents that, ‘hey, we recommend that your children be seven and older to utilize this device.’ So clearly that creates an opportunity for five-year-olds, six-year-olds, that first-time handheld gaming consumer.”
The 2DS will be able to play both DS and 3DS games, will maintain all of the 3DS’ cameras, wifi capabilities, and its charger compatibility. In place of the 3D depth slider is a switch to turn the system on sleep mode.
Take a look at what the latest “version” of the 3DS, the 2DS, will look like below.
The new version of the console will release on 12 October, notably the same day as the Pokémon X and Y release. There will be a red and blue version of the console, and it will retail at a MSRP of $129.99.
The 3DS, currently $169.99, and the 3DS XL, which runs for a hefty $199.99, will both continue to be sold in stores.
We’re not sold on the idea of a 2DS. A lot of what makes 3DS games fun are the 3D in-game effects. Nothing beats the 3D experiences we had when playing though The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time 3D with enemies flying at our face.
The 3DS lite?
Fans of Nintendo have been clamoring for a better looking 3DS ever since the console was released two years ago. Could this kid-friendly version of the console be the one that we’ve been asking for?
