If you’re looking for some new TV and movies to stream on Netflix or HBO this weekend, there are plenty of great options.
This weekend Netflix has to bow down to HBO, the original king of premium TV. Game of Thrones premieres Sunday, April 24 on HBO, HBO Go, and HBO Now, and all signs are pointing to it being a huge season premiere. To make its chances for success even greater, the pay cabler is offering free access to HBO all weekend!
But there’s a lot more happening this weekend besides Thrones, including the release of a couple popular movies. Here’s what’s new to stream on Netflix and HBO, for your less-searching-more-watching convenience:
Now on Netflix: ‘Catching The Sun’
For those who love the environment (all of us, hopefully), a new documentary on Netflix looks at “the international race to build a clean energy economy.” It premiered on Friday, April 22.
Now on Netflix: ‘Patton Oswalt: Talking for Clapping’
Patton Oswalt’s latest special Talking for Clapping, which was shot in San Francisco, debuted on Netflix on Friday, April 22. If you miss his epic Star Wars filibuster on Parks & Rec, good news: The comedian naturally touches on his obsession with a galaxy far, far away.
Now on Netflix: ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 2 debuted last week on Netflix, but it’s worth mentioning this week anyway. If you loved all the ridiculousness this show served up minute by minute during season 1, you’ll like the sophomore season just as much.
April 23, 6:55 p.m. eastern: ‘Jurassic World’ – HBO
The only thing bigger than Beyonce and Westeros? Dinosaurs. The biggest movie of summer 2015 debuts on HBO this weekend, offering moviegoers who loved seeing it in theaters the chance to see it again in the comfort of their own home. And Universal just announced the director of the Jurassic World sequel which’ll star Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, so now’s a perfect time to watch the “original” again.
April 23, 9 p.m. ET: Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ – HBO
Amidst rumors that a new album is imminent, Beyoncé will unveil a new something Saturday night on HBO titled Lemonade. The rumor mill is pretty confident it’s a short film of some sort, but less clear is what this means for the new album that’s supposedly coming. Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour begins soon, so many in the Beyhive are hoping Lemonade will tease or lead to a full-blown studio album.
Sunday, April 24: ‘Minions’ – Netflix
If you need to shield the kiddies from Game of Thrones, Netflix has a good solution for you: The Despicable Me spinoff Minions is streaming on Netflix beginning Sunday, April 24.
April 24, 9 p.m. ET: ‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 – HBO
Without question, this is the biggest thing happening on TV this week. Hell, this month. Hell, maybe this year. For the first time since HBO’s adaptation began, Game of Thrones will tell parts of George R.R. Martin’s story that he himself has yet to publish. (He tried to beat them, but couldn’t make it happen.) Between entering uncharted waters and not giving the press early access to new episodes, hype for this series is at an all-time high.
The season premiere will be on HBO Go and HBO Now as soon as the episode begins airing on Sunday at 9 p.m. eastern/6 p.m. pacific. If HBO’s streaming services don’t crash under the immense demand, that is.
