Ever since Nick and Jess broke up, fans have been waiting for them to get back together. It looks like New Girl season 5 might just be heading in that direction!
The “year of us” certainly has all of the loft mates developing, while still staying the characters that we love. Schmidt is now engaged to Cece, Winston is excelling as a police officer, Jess is continuing toward her goal of becoming principal, and Nick is part owner of the bar.
To us, it seems like Nick is taking the biggest strides in growing to a better self. It has us wondering if he’s doing it with a specific goal in mind, to earn Jess’ favor again. When they broke up it seemed clear that it was only temporary and they fully expected to get back together. In order for a relationship between them to work, however, Nick needed some personal growth.
Let’s examine the evidence:
‘New Girl’ 5×01 ‘Big Mama P’
After Schmidt and Cece ask Nick and Jess to be the maid of honor and best man, they start to plan the engagement party. Everyone assumes that Nick only wants the easy jobs, so they assign him the task of picking up Cece’s mom from the airport. He’s ecstatic when he arrives on time to pick her up, but he accidentally got the wrong woman. Nick doesn’t realize this until he gets to the party and learns everyone is worried because Cece’s mom showed up and drops the bomb that Cece never told her about Schmidt.
Instead of giving up and letting Jess handle the mess, like we’d probably expect, Nick tells them that he wants to help and is very serious about it. Jess and Schmidt don’t seem to believe him, but Nick follows through and dances with Schmidt in the Bollywood show for Cece and her mom.
‘New Girl’ 5×02 ‘What About Fred?’
Now that Nick and Schmidt are owners of the bar, Nick has a lot more responsibility. With the hopes that one day Nick can take over full ownership, Schmidt tries to help him learn how to manage the other bar tenders. The problem is that Nick has always been such a slacker himself that he’s let certain things slide that will have the bar losing money if they keep going. However, Schmidt’s ideas turn out to be just too strict so Nick has to learn how to balance everything.
This shows that Nick has more aspirations now than before when he was happy to just work a few hours at the bar. If he ever does want to buy Schmidt out of the business he’ll have to work hard which we all know if a big turn on for Jess. She definitely likes to see the Nick that just wants to have fun, but she also needs a guy who is serious about the future.
‘New Girl 5×03 ‘Jury Duty’
Once again we got to see a more mature Nick, as he worried over the state of the loft. With Cece spending more time there, her messiness has become an issue. He can’t understand why no one has told her before to pick up her stuff and just can’t stand it. It becomes a big argument until Schmidt becomes upset that they’re fighting and they end up coming to an agreement.
This episode didn’t show as much progress as the previous two, but it did continue that pattern of Nick acting more like an adult (minus the name calling). It also showed how much Nick and Jess still rely on one another for advice, as they spent a lot of time on the phone over the episode.
The remainder of ‘New Girl’ season 5
Starting in episode 5×04 Jess will be gone while on jury duty, so it should be interesting to see what happens with Nick. Will he continue on with the progress even without Jess around? We do know that he will be the one to organize the loft into an airbnb in order to help pay for Schmidt’s bachelor party. Then a visit from his cousin will have him planning for his future even more. We could be looking too much into this because we love Nick and Jess as a couple so much, but it’s always a possibility that this is just what the New Girl writers are thinking about, too!
