It’s never too late for a sequel, and the Bad Boys franchise knows this all too well. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will reprise their roles for a 2018 release.
Bad Boys, directed by Michael Bay, first hit the big screen in 1995 and was the perfect blend of action and comedy. Smith and Lawrence were a hilarious duo that could deliver a punch as easily as they could deliver a punchline.
It took a while, but Bad Boys II (also directed by Bay) followed up in 2003, meaning there was a solid eight years between the films.
In the land of sequels, this is a pretty big gap. A lot of films these days look to release their sequels within a year of the previous movie. It keeps the property fresh in everyone’s minds and fans are more motivated to count down the days to the next premiere.
Others do well to take their time between installments, which allows for the creators to solidify the script and make sure they’re delivering the best product possible.
Then again, some sequels shouldn’t try to bridge such a large gap, which Independence Day: Resurgence unfortunately learned earlier this summer. Ironically, that’s a sequel Smith had no desire to appear in.
He will be showing up in Bad Boys 3, however, which has gained the new title Bad Boys for Life, EW has confirmed. They’ve also uncovered the new release date, which is set for January 12, 2018.
That’s still a ways off, but perhaps this date will finally stick, as the last two, which were set for both February and June of 2017, have obviously been crossed off the calendar.
Bay won’t be returning for the third installment, as Director Joe Carnahan has taken up the mantle. Bad Boys 4 is also still in the pipeline, EW confirms, with the July 3, 2019 release date remaining unchanged for now.
