Neil Gaiman has won a Hugo Award for penning the Doctor Who episode “The Doctor’s Wife.” The win marked Gaiman’s fifth Hugo award and the first in connection with his writing for Doctor Who.
According to the BBC, this is the sixth Hugo won by Doctor Who since its return in 2005.The episode in question was a fan favorite from last year in which the TARDIS comes to life in a body of a woman named Idris.
According to Alpha Airlock, “In his acceptance speech, Gaiman thanked Clark, the production team, the cast, Russell T. Davies, Steven Moffat, Verity Lambert (the first producer of the series in 1963), and Sydney Newman, who originally conceived of the series. Gaiman said “Doctor Who” celebrates love, hope and intellect over brawn. But he added that he’s working on a new “Doctor Who” story, because why not? Only a madman would try to top it.”
Later, Gaiman took to his blog to state,
I got four hours sleep. I flew back to Albany, while my Hugo was taken home without me in a TARDIS-blue car with the license plate IDRIS. [see above photo] Can anything be more appropriate?Thank you to Idris-owner Steven Manfred, who has by now answered at least two thousand Doctor Who questions from me, and is always there when I come up with a new bunch of questions.
And it feels so strange to be writing that my episode of Doctor Who won a Hugo Award. I remember when I was predicting on this blog that The Girl in the Fireplace and Blink would win Hugos. And they did…
