Nashville never does a slow burn, unless you are talking about getting Rayna and Deacon together, so everything is moving at fast break pace tonight. Let’s get to it.
Rayna, Luke, and family are filming a holiday special at the house for charity right before Luke goes back on tour and then comes home to get hitched. (Does anyone think that is actually going to happen?) Deacon stops by to give Maddie her final guitar lesson of the year and it’s a bit awkward. Luke obviously doesn’t like Deacon being around Rayna, shocker.
Gunnar was supposed to cancel ZAG (the name of the band which this viewer did not know) at the Winter Festival but didn’t. While co-writing a new song for Sadie’s album she says she can get her manager to meet him and despite his breakup with Zooey it’s a go. I seriously love ZAG (still processing the name) and all of their music so I really hope this doesn’t spell disaster.
Meanwhile, Will and Layla are in desperate need of a break from their showmance. They head to Winter Fest and end up splitting up to enjoy some freedom. Scarlett is coaching Terry, which is hilarious given her breakdown last season. Gunnar brings Micah to the concert and I am trying to buy the breakup between him and Zooey. Will sees an openly gay couple being happy and it’s just all too painful to watch.
Juliette overhears a business conversation between Avery and Gunnar about him potentially producing Sadie’s new music and decides to stalk him with Emily. This will be hilarious. She ends up at the concert, draped in a shawl and a scooter. Yep, hilarious. She sees his meeting with Sadie and he of course sees her spying on him.
Shady Jeff is back, and he hears Layla giving an impromptu performance. Her character is finally growing on me, and I feel like it might be too late for her which is unfortunate. He actually gives her a compliment. So about that nice break up. Zooey and Gunnar decide that the time to be snippy is when the manager is telling them they could be the next Lady Antebellum. It’s weird when Avery is the voice of reason.
Unsurprisingly, Deacon reads the sure-to-be controversial cover story that Rayna gave to Rolling Stone before she can stop him. Luke is not happy about the story either but doesn’t act like a crazy person, right now at least. Deacon shows up later in the day to give Maddie her new guitar, and finds out why she used their history to get the reporter off of Maddie. He is still upset and leaves.
It’s show time for Terry and one has to wonder if Scarlett is feeling the performance bug. He kills the number but ends up having a panic attack after it’s over. Scarlett finds him in the park, drunk, and he calls her on her stage fright. Zooey ends up leaving after telling Gunnar that she is not selfish for not wanting to be an insta-family. Jeff and Layla are having a weird bonding moment and it makes me remember again why I enjoy Oliver Hudson and was excited when he was cast on the show. I’m sure it won’t last.
Odds and ends: Juliette asks Sadie over and convinces her to use Avery as her producer. Her hopes of being more than friends are in tatters at the moment. Will ends up hitting on the beer guy and gets shut down. Scarlett ends up joining Gunnar and Avery for their performance, and they don’t sound like ZAG who aren’t anymore apparently but it’s still good!
Who knew that drama ridden Scarlett would have the most healthy relationships with her exes. Zooey sees the performance on the big screen and leaves. For good? Terry sees the same performance and smiles? Who knows. The song is a hit! Will tries to call Layla, who is getting a ride from Jeff and this can’t end well.
Rayna is feeling the guilt coming from the girls about not having their usual Christmas. It all boils down to the cover story and she leaves Luke to go fix things with Deacon. I bet he’s happy with that development. She tells Deke that all their important moments are still special to her. And he tells her that he understands why he never let go.
He loves her and always will. This is one epic standoff and something tells me that there will definitely be casualties when it’s over. She heads home and Luke is relieved that he still has a fiance. At least for now.
Gunnar gets a call from the manager, who loves the addition of Scarlett to the band. He turns down the offer because of Micah. Avery shows up at Juliette’s door to thank her for helping him get the gig with Sadie. They still love each other you guys!!! Kiss and make up already!
Luke tries to start a new tradition, a holiday special, and Rayna gives the coldest shoulder ever. “I know babe.” They proceed to sing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” as flashes of Will coming home to an empty house, Layla and a naked Jeff, Zooey leaving for California, Deacon pining play over the song.
Next week is the wedding that may or may not happen and just so happens to be the winter finale! Check back later in the week for upcoming Nashville news!
