Tom Holland will be joined by actress and singer Zendaya in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot.
According to Deadline, Zendaya will play a “key role” in the movie, but it “doesn’t sound like” she’ll be playing Peter Parker’s / Spider-Man’s love interest. She is expected to play a character named Michelle.
This’ll be an important role for 19-year-old Zendaya because it’ll be her biggest project to date. She’s been seen in TV shows including K.C. Undercover, Shake It Up!, and the TV movie Zapped. Oh, and she played Cut-Throat in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video.
If she’s not Spider-Man’s love interest, but she plays a key role, might she be a best friend to Peter Parker? She’s the same age as Tom Holland.
Don’t expect this to be the last person joining the cast who is a person of color. Here’s an interesting nugget from The Hollywood Reporter:
Sources tell me that Marvel/Sony has been looking to go heavily non-white with the SPIDER-MAN supporting cast.

The new Spider-Man reboot, being produced by Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Amy Pascal, will open in theaters July 7, 2017. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is expected to make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War which opens in theaters this May.
Marvel finally took back control of the Spider-Man franchise in February 2015. This’ll be the third reboot series for Spider-Man, and the rumor mill believes there’ll be one Spider-Man movie for every year Peter Parker is in high school.
