This morning we shared a new interview with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence, who dished on how Haymitch’s character will develop in the sequel and more.
Now, additional quotes from the interview have been released.
Interestingly, Lawrence confirms that he hasn’t spoken to The Hunger Games director Gary Ross at all to seek out some advice. He says it wasn’t necessary because producers Nina Jacobson and John Kilik, as well as author Suzanne Collins, have been involved with the whole franchise. “One of the first things that I did when I got the job—I think it was five or six days after I got the job—I got on a plane to New York and sat in a room with Suzanne, and she and I basically went through the book together. And just kind of created a beat sheet over the course of three days that became the basis for the script.”
Even with help from numerous people behind the scenes on The Hunger Games, we’re a bit surprised Ross didn’t get to share any ideas. He was very outspoken at the film’s premiere in early 2012 about his ideas for Catching Fire before he decided he didn’t have the time to take on the project.
Towards the end of Lawrence’s interview, we learned he’s actually done quite a bit of work already on Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2. We learned in November he will be directing both films, which suggests Lionsgate is very happy with how he’s handling Catching Fire. “Nina, John, Suzanne and I have gone through the book and created the beat sheets for it. And started going through all that and at least marking our initial ideas of what the moments would be and how it all breaks down. He added, “Danny Strong, who’s writing the first one, is working now. So yeah, we’ve actually done a fair amount of work. We’re starting to think about where we could shoot it and all of that.”
Strong had said in December that he “pitched his heart out” to get the gig.
The first six photos from Catching Fire earlier this month much to the satisfaction of the fans. It opens November 22.
