The first clip from Disney’s Moana was revealed by lead actress Auli’i Cravalho.
Moana promises to deliver a powerful new female hero for kids of all ages to identify with and idolize.
Until now, however, the promotional campaign for the movie has been primarily focused on the lead male character Maui. This is understandable, as Dwayne Johnson has the star factor that Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho doesn’t (yet) have. As such, he might help draw in skeptical viewers that aren’t here for badass girl power (pshh, who needs them?).
We’re nonetheless relieved that the first clip from the movie finally puts the spotlight on Moana herself! Fittingly, the clip was shared by Cravalho on Twitter. Check it out below:
After some man-strutting and mild animal abuse, Maui finally lets Moana have the word — and boy does she take it.
“You are not my hero!” she declares, “and I’m not here so you can sign my ore.”
Moana clearly has her own agenda, which we know involves saving her people.
The movie doesn’t only look empowering and entertaining, it’ll also be a visual spectacle like no other: Moana’s quest takes her across the sea, and Disney has developed brand new technology to properly emulate water and waves. As water appears in 80% of the movie’s shots, we can only imagine the kind of work that’s gone into bringing this world to life.
‘Moana’ movie synopsis
Via Disney, the official synopsis for the movie reads:
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast South Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped — and no one today knows why.
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes ‘Moana,’ a sweeping, CG-animated adventure about a spirited teenager who sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors’ unfinished quest. During her journey, she meets the once-mighty demi-god Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), and together, they traverse the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous fiery creatures and impossible odds.
The movie premieres on November 23, 2016.
