Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 5 has officially signed director Christopher McQuarrie to helm the next film in the franchise.

Fans may recall that Christopher McQuarrie was the writer and director of Tom Cruise’s film, Jack Reacher, and his name has been tossed around as being in the mix for Mission: Impossible 5 in the last few weeks.

Tom Cruise also recently dropped out of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., so that he could focus on the next Mission: Impossible sequel, which he always seems to take great pride in. What’s interesting is the way that the director revealed he was attached to the film, which was by tweeting: “Mission: Accepted.”

This would seem to indicate that he has officially signed on to the direct the film, despite not officially hearing from the studio yet. What is official is that Iron Man 3’s writer, Drew Pearce, will be writing the script for Mission: Impossible 5, and of course Tom Cruise will be back, along with Simon Pegg.

Tom Cruise reportedly decided to focus on MI5 because Ghost Protocol was the most successful film in the Mission: Impossible franchise, along with being Tom Cruise’s most financially successful film to date.

Ghost Protocol pulled in $694 million worldwide, and we imagine its sequel, which is headed for a 2015 release date, will see even larger numbers.
