Milla Jovovich is in final negotiations to star in In the Lost Lands, an adaptation of three short stories by George R.R. Martin.
In the Lost Lands will intertwine three of Martin’s tales, all of which have female leads. Jovovich will play the sorceress Grey Alys, the lead character of the short story from which the film takes its title. At the behest of a mountain queen, Grey Alys travels to the ghostly Lost Lands to gain the power of becoming a werewolf.
But this is a George R.R. Martin story — so of course this quest will have a terrible price.
In the Lost Lands will also adapt The Lonely Songs of Laren Dorr — the story of a girl named Sharra who journeys to find and fight the dragon who guards the gates of the seven worlds. Sharra seeks her lost lover, but winds up seduced by a mysterious lord who may hold the power she seeks.
The third story, Bitterblooms, features a futuristic setting in which a “young barbarian girl” is taken in by a spaceship-dwelling witch. Though the witch shows the girl “beauty and love,” which — unsurprisingly — “turns out to be a net of lies and deceit.”
Jovovich has previously starred in the Resident Evil series, and appeared in last year’s Anarchy with Ethan Hawke. Justin Chatwin, of Showtime’s Shameless is also attached to star in the project, which will be adapted and directed by Constantin Werner.
George R.R. Martin, of course, is best known for his epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, on which HBO’s Game of Thrones is based. Though much of Martin’s vast body of work has been optioned for film, surprisingly little has actually been produced. In the Lost Lands will be the first work of Martin’s to reach production since Game of Thrones began to dominate the television landscape.
The film is set to begin shooting in Germany near the end of the year.
