Legendary actor Mickey Rooney has passed away. He was 93 years old.
Variety has the report that Mickey Rooney has passed away.
The cause of death has not been confirmed, but Rooney had been in poor health for quite some time.
Rooney’s career included well over 300 acting credits. His first role was as Mickey McBan in the 1926 short Not to be Trusted, and his last was as Mr. Louis in the currently filming Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
He was known for being one of Hollywood’s biggest child stars. He starred in many memorable films including Strike up the Band, My Pal the King, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, National Velvet, and Manhattan Melodrama.
Later in his career, Rooney had roles in The Fox and the Hound, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and even Night at the Museum.
Rooney was an actor through and through, evidenced by his inability to ever give up the profession. He certainly didn’t need to keep working, but the actor continued to take on roles into his nineties. He had two films, Fragments from Olympus: The Vision of Nikola Tesla and Old Soldiers that were in pre-production.
Rooney was nominated for four competitive Oscars, but he never won. He received leading role nominations for Babes in Arms and The Human Comedy as well as supporting role nominations for The Bold and the Brave. In 1983 he was given an honorary Oscar “in recognition of his 50 years of versatility in a variety of memorable film performances.”
Rooney was a legendary actor who will be missed, but certainly not forgotten.
Rest in peace, Mickey Rooney.
