Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has swapped out its composers from Alexandre Desplat to Michael Giacchino just weeks before the end of post-production.
Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones)’s adventure aboard the Firefly space ship is about to get a little less Wes Anderson and a little more J.J. Abrams, which is possibly for the better (depending on preference, of course).
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Rogue One, which premieres this December, has changed its composers to accommodate the changes made to the film due to the extensive re-shoots, that allegedly changed the tone and story significantly.

Following the reshoots, original composer Alexandre Desplat was no longer available, and he has now been replaced with Michael Giacchino, another legendary composer and long-time collaborator of Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams.
Among many other projects the pair worked together on the Star Trek movies. But since J.J. Abrams’ transition from Star Trek to Star Wars was very smooth, we expect that Giacchino’s will be too. Especially since he is himself a Star Wars fan, and appeared in Abrams’ The Force Awakens as a storm trooper.
Giacchino’s connection to J.J. Abrams goes back much further than Star Trek: The pair first came together on the TV show Alias, where Giacchino delivered a techno beat to accompany superspy Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner)’s daring missions.
Giacchino and Abrams have worked on several movies together since, but their most celebrated collaboration is probably the TV show Lost, which was one of the first series to receive a full-blown orchestral score.
Giacchino famously incorporated home-made instruments, as well as instruments of Hawaiian origin. Listen to a sample below:
And of course the composer is no stranger to Disney: Not only has Giacchino worked for Disney through the ABC extension, he has also served as composer on a number of Pixar films including Up, Inside Out, and The Incredibles (he’ll also be scoring the upcoming sequel). Marvel’s Doctor Strange will also benefit from his talent.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and premieres December 16, 2016.
