In a new video interview, Merlin actors Colin Morgan and Bradley James talk about Merlin and Arthur’s friendship (no spoilers for season 5).
The Merlin cast did a lot of publicity ahead of the final season of the show, and while it has already aired in the U.K., the rest of the world still has all 13 episodes to look forward to!
This brief interview clip features Bradley James and Colin Morgan talking about one of the show’s most important relationships, the “bromance” between Arthur and Merlin:
James says that the two characters, after all the time they’ve spent together, “Get on very well, they have a good laugh, [and] they’re there for each other.” And after all they’ve been through together, “naturally, you bond.”
He continues, “people probably say oh, I’d like a situation like that in my life. So yeah, I think people relate to it.”
Finally, James talks about wearing chainmail, and how it amplifies the temperature when he wears it while filming. Morgan didn’t have to wear any of that, although he does allow that there were both positives and negatives to all the costumes.
In a separate interview, James talks to Poptimal about the final series of the show, and previews that, “The legends that everyone’s familiar with, and they’re told in so many different ways, will have been suitably changed in our own way that will make it interesting for fans.” He also expects that audiences will be happy with how it ends, and says that Merlin is, “becoming more of an adviser than a servant” this year while Arthur is moving closer to the man we know from the legends.
You might also be interested in a recent interview with Colin Morgan and Katie McGrath, done with After Elton, in which they go into more depth about the relationships between the characters and reveal what slash pairings they’d like to have seen happen on the show (our favourite: Percival and Gaius!?).
Merlin premieres tonight in the U.S., airing at 10/9c on the SyFy channel! The first episode of season 5 is titled “Arthur’s Bane, Part 1” and will see Merlin and Arthur trek north to rescue the knights from Morgana’s clutches…
Beware of spoilers in the comments, although we encourage our British readers to respect the people who haven’t yet seen the final season and not to give away anything about how the series ends.
