Hypable spoke with Teen Wolf‘s Meagan Tandy about the premiere episode of season 4, her character Braeden, and what we can expect from the show this year.
Meagan Tandy plays Braeden, a mercenary who was hired by Ms. Morrell to save Isaac from the twins in the first episode of season 3. By the end of that episode, it appeared that Braeden had died. Luckily for Tandy, however, her supposed death was purposefully shown off-screen, allowing her to come back later in the season and continue on to season 4.
“I was really, honestly supposed to be dead,” she tells us. “I was written to be slashed and dashed by Deucalion.” She explains, “In the script for 3A, it was supposed to be this shot of me having blood gushing out of my throat — you know, it’s Teen Wolf — and my eyes were supposed to roll back into my head, and all this dramatic crazy stuff. We didn’t shoot it at all, which is awesome, and I always had this thought like, ‘Oh my God, maybe I’m coming back,’ and so, towards the end of 3A, they kind of gave me the hint like, ‘Hey, we might be bringing you in.'”
So, why did they bring Braeden back when she was supposed to die right from the start? “At one of the wrap parties,” Tandy explains, “Jeff [Davis, executive producer] was telling me and a few other people that I inspired him to want to write more, which is so weird because I’ve never heard that before, and it’s probably the best compliment you can ever get from a creator on a show.” Tandy says it was because of her portrayal and the commitment she had to the role that Davis wanted to give her a larger role, which is something she’s extremely thankful for.
That larger role comes with the idea that Braeden has been involved with the supernatural for some time, though we don’t know much about her background just yet. While Tandy says that it hasn’t been addressed yet, she does have a few ideas of what her character was up to before she found her way to Beacon Hills.
“From the little tidbits and things that I’ve chatted with even Jeff, I feel like, perhaps, in my past, I was definitely part of maybe the military or something. And somewhere, someway, somehow, I found out about this whole thing that was going down in Beacon Hills.” Tandy says that although she’s a good guy, she’s obviously been hired to perform jobs by bad guys — such as Deucalion hiring her to rescue Derek and Peter. “There must have been someway, somewhere, in my past within even the military that I must’ve gotten kicked out or something. And I’m basically on my own. I don’t know who the heck to trust, but at the same time I need the money.”
“I don’t think Braeden, as of right now, has any supernatural connections that would’ve led her directly into this. It’s gotta have something to do with her as a mercenary,” she finishes.
In the premiere episode, Braeden cites her favorite line, “A girl’s gotta eat.” She’s a hired gun, and she’ll do what she has to in order to make money. But is there a point at which she’d draw the line? “The one day she starts to actually care about what’s happening — and it’s no longer about the money, it’s more about who she’s actually saving, who she’s protecting, or who’s she’s going after to kill — I think once she starts to care, then none of that is even going to matter,” Tandy says.
“She’s gotta go somewhere,” Tandy continues, talking of Braeden and her tendency to be cold and gruff. “She can’t just be this stone cold biotch the whole time. If and when she starts to care about the group, perhaps there will maybe be a different side of her.”
So where will Braeden be going this season? “She’s going to be helping out the group as much as possible. I feel like there’s definitely going to be a point where perhaps maybe she’s going to forget about the fact that she’s been hired because now it’s not about that. I think people can expect to see maybe a slight shift in her.”
