Chronicle writer Max Landis is set to make his directorial debut with Me Him Her, a comedy about sexual identity that will be financed by Big Beach Films.
Variety reports the project, which Landis penned from an original idea, is “a quarter-life-crisis tale set in Los Angeles that features three young leads, at least one of whom is struggling with their sexuality. Exploring sex, love and friendship in what Landis describes as ‘the weirdest, most surreal way possible,’ the story ultimately emphasizes that conceptions of self should be flexible.”
Landis, who is currently casting the film for a production start date sometime next year, is keeping the exact synopsis of the film mum. In fact, he’s so secretive of the project, he’s been giving the Return of the Jedi logline to inquiring agents, although Landis couldn’t keep completely quiet on the project, telling Variety, “It’s totally insane! The devil is in it.”
Me Him Her is also described as “Reality Bites on acid,” referring to the 1994 Ben Stiller-directed film following Generation X graduates facing life and love after college. Other than these loose details there isn’t much known about the project, although we’ve been told that the story is surreal, mind-bending and hallucinogenic.
Big Beach Films, who most recently produced Safety Not Guaranteed and is also the company behind Little Miss Sunshine and Everything Is Illuminated, is fully financing the film, with Peter Saraf and Marc Turtletaub to serve as producers.
An exact production start date is not yet known, as Landis has other writing commitments, including Chronicle 2, Frankenstein, an original feature, Amnesty, at Universal, and a top-secret project at Disney. While Variety reports that production is tentatively set for early-to-mid 2013, we can confirm that casting is underway, as Landis is currently meeting with potential actors for the three leads.
