Disney has released a new Maleficent preview, which puts the film’s live-action footage next to Sleeping Beauty’s animated scenes.
In this new trailer, which includes Lana Del Ray’s dark cover of “Once Upon A Dream,” Angelina Jolie’s interpretation of the Sleeping Beauty villain is compared to footage from the animated princess movie from 1959.
After viewing this trailer you’ll see that the two overlap at certain points but are very different interpretations. Even though it didn’t seem like it in this trailer, we imagine (and hope) that there will be a couple shot-by-shot recreations between Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent. It would be a nice way to pay tribute and respect the original classic.
In related news, a new clip from Maleficent was released this week in which we see Princess Aurora pricking her finger on the spinning wheel and falling into a sleep-like death while the titular villain tries to ride to the scene to intervene.
Maleficent opens in theaters next Friday, May 30. The film “explores the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the classic Sleeping Beauty and the elements of her betrayal that ultimately turn her pure heart to stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.”
