Following the huge success of their debut album The Heist, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are back with a new song titled “Growing Up.”
The slow but emotional song about a father’s relationship with their child features Macklemore’s familiar rap style and a few vocals from Ed Sheeran. “Growing Up” includes a little bit of piano that will remind you of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Same Love.”
The new song was inspired by Macklemore’s daughter Sloane who was born in May. “There is nothing like the joy and happiness that comes from bringing a baby into this universe. She has filled my heart in ways that I never knew were possible. She is the love of my life. This song is for her,” Macklemore said today.
Interestingly, the YouTube version of the song features a quick clip of the day Sloane was born at the very end of the song — Macklemore, whose real name is Ben Taggerty, is seen holding his child in the hospital for what may be his first time:
Besides the clip at the end, the rest of the video only depicts the album art, which makes the scene at the end a sort of Easter egg.
“When you try to escape yourself, life has an interesting way of creating situations that force you to come back,” Macklemore says of his new song. “To look at who you are. This is why ‘Growing Up’ felt like the right song to re-emerge with. It’s where I’ve been the last year, through all the ups and downs. We didn’t want to do a big campaign or anything over the top with this. We just wanted to put out good music, directly to the people that have been here since the beginning. Thank you for your patience. Hope you enjoy.”

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are currently at work on their third studio album. Earlier this year the former said their new album would be released by the end of 2015. The artists offered no update on timing today, but certainly the release of “Growing Up” is a sign that new things are on the way.
