Scream season 3 will reboot the story and introduce new characters. A lot of fans aren’t happy, but I’m still willing to give the series a chance.
I loved Scream season 1 for a variety of reasons, not least of which because the characters were mysterious, real, and unpredictable. Season 2 wasn’t for everyone, but I certainly had fun guessing who the second killer was. The final reveal didn’t blow my mind, but it had an emotional impact that I wasn’t expecting.
Although, if I’m being perfectly honest, I’d rather forget the Halloween special ever happened in the first place.
Still, I liked who we had been introduced to in the first two seasons and I wanted to see their stories come to a fulfilling close. It was with a shock, then, that I received the news that Scream season 3 would reboot the series.
What about the characters I had already fallen in love with? What about the town that had become so familiar? There are still questions that have been left unanswered, and I know I’m going to miss the actors who breathed new life into this franchise.
So, for a while, I thought about boycotting season 3. If MTV didn’t have faith enough in the series to continue going in the same direction, why should I have faith that this reboot would be any different?
It would be one thing if each season were a self-contained story and the series overall acted like an anthology, but this proves they weren’t happy with the success of the first version and are now looking to see if they can hit a homerun with the second version.
It just doesn’t sit too well with me.
That said, Scream recently announced the brand new characters we’ll be following in season 3. Here’s the run-down of the new players for this reboot (via TV Line):
*First up is Dion, a Michael B. Jordan-esque football player on track to score a college scholarship — that is, until a masked killer uses Dion’s darkest secrets against him, turning his life upside down and making him question his own sanity.
*Liv is Dion’s cheerleader girlfriend, as beautiful as she is brilliant. She’s also down to lend a helping hand where needed, though her good intentions often land her in hot water.
*Kym is the rebellious one of the group, always willing to say what everyone else is thinking. She’s organized and protective, two qualities that will serve her well when a killer starts targeting her friends.
*Beth is a little different from her fellow seniors, sporting a goth look and a morbid collection of interests. A “walking encyclopedia of all things horror,” she’s compared to The Craft‘s Fairuza Balk.
*And then there’s Dion’s step-brother Jamal. Despite hanging out with a rough crowd, he’s got a big heart and an undying loyalty to Dion.
Right off the bat I have one concern, in that it seems like Dion may be our new Emma. I’m not sure how I feel about replacing the female lead, the “survivor girl,” with a male character, but this isn’t necessarily a deal breaker. Besides, we’re not sure which direction they’re taking the story in yet, so who knows what’ll happen. Maybe they’ll kill off Dion in episode 3 and another character will take his place.
The rest of the lineup is certainly promising, however. Scream is looking to diversify its cast, with two Black leads in Dion and Jamal. Kym and Liv both have an open casting call, with women of all backgrounds being considered. The cast of the first incarnation of Scream heavily featured Caucasian actors, so this will be a welcome change.
Aside from that, the characters themselves are pretty interesting. I love that Liv is beautiful, smart, and kind (it’s very Lydia from Teen Wolf). Beth will basically be the new Noah, and I love that they’re giving this role to a female. Seeing her team up with someone like Liv is also going to make for a great dynamic, much like we saw between Emma and Audrey.
Each of the characters seems to contain a multitude of contradictions — beautiful but kind, rebellious but protective, rough on the outside but with a big heart on the inside — and that’s what I find most intriguing about this new group. I hope we can fall in love with them as easily as we fell in love with the Lakewood Six. Then again, that’ll just cause more heartache when they’re inevitably cut down by the killer.
My last hope for Scream season 3 is that we get a couple throwaway lines about the remaining members of the Lakewood Six. We deserve to know what’s happened to them and how they’re doing now that we’re moving on. It’s the least the creators can give us.
