The Legend of Tarzan has a star studded-cast, and now we have our first look at Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan, and Suicide Squad actress Margot Robbie as Jane.
The live-action adaptation of The Legend of Tarzan has had a fairly quiet production, but these new images should start things off right. With the incredibly talented Margot Robbie and Alexander Skarsgard in revealing costumes, we see our first look at the characters who will star in the film directed by David Yates.
Update: Universal has released the first Legend of Tarzan trailer!
In our first look of Legend of Tarzan, Margot Robbie is seen as Jane and has a few scrapes on her shoulder as Tarzan stands behind her. Skarsgard looks pretty ripped for Tarzan, but he seems to have some fairly traditional pants on despite living in the woods.
Director David Yates is reportedly starting with Tarzan having already left the jungle as the King of the Jungle, and lives in Victorian England with his wife, Jane. Apparently in this remake he’ll be asked back to the Congo by an emissary, which may explain the khaki pants he has on in these first pictures.
Alexander Skarsgard says, “It’s almost the opposite of the classic tale, where it’s about taming the beast. This is about a man who’s holding back and slowly as you peel off the layers, he reverts back to a more animalistic state and lets that side of his personality out.”
While it’s certainly different than the story we’ve known for decades, it looks like Harry Potter director David Yates wants to change it up a bit. This is probably a good thing, and with the fanbase of Skarsgard, and the talent Margot Robbie has shown in her latest films, this could be an interesting movie to keep an eye on.
Yates says he envisions Robbie as a 21st-century take on a character who’s “in no way a passive partner to Tarzan. She’s a really strong, assertive, beautifully knowledgeable, very sexy modern woman who can more than look after herself. In a way, it’s a story of two human beings and how they save each other.”
Potter fans were always split on Yates’ take on the last four Harry Potter films, but he’s certainly a talented writer and director. It’s interesting that he decided to take on this story, and we look forward to what he does with the unique tale of Tarzan.
The Legend Of Tarzan will also star Djimon Hounsou as Chief Mbonga, Samuel L. Jackson as George Washington Williams, and Christoph Waltz as Captain Leon Rom. The movie’s release date is set for July 1, 2016.
